Yeah, about $250.
Prices have gone up lately for grain because of the drought.
But still all worth it, that lot will see me through till xmas/Jan.
May have to stock up in between on some others.

I've got the Cab/sav kit in primary at the moment and seems to be happily
fermenting away at 16*. Took an SG today after only 4 days in primary
and its sitting on 1.014. It tastes dry, but very bloody sweet. I know
its still got a fair few points to drop, but does it still stay sweet or does it dry ...

Hi dragonphoenix73,
are you brewing AG or kits?
If AG, I have a pretty nice Schwarztbier recipe that I have
on tap all the time. Its a very nice dark lager.
If your using kits I think the other guys suggestions
will be more help. LMK if you need the recipe.

I've never done a wine kit before, so has anyone got any tips
to make it come out drinkable? temps, procedures?
Cheers

it may indeed be possible to use all malt and have a “low” FG. Thought it may not be possible to achieve this in a home brewing situation

I regularily get a low FG doing AG beers. My last 2 pales have finnished at 1.004  using US56. Have to check brewing notes to find out whats ...

well done on your first mate, no looking back now hey
as Ed said, dont worry about efficiencies and trub getting into your fermenter
too much just yet. Just get stuck in and do it. Increase in efficiency will
come as you do more and actually see whats going on.
Your efficiency looks around ...

If you can't get any from your HBS, check out
a Chemist, they should stock Iodine. Not sure on price tho.

If your after a simple guide to mashing check out this site.

http://cruisenews.net/brewing/infusion/

Explains it pretty simply. A good place to start.
Has lots of pictures to help understand the process, but be prepared
for the downward spiral to the dark side if you go down this path

Dont know about the orange juice thing  , but what I used to do when I was brewing kits is to throw the kit
yeast into the boil to act as a nutrient for my better yeast.
