Hi there munkey, A bit of SMB residue doesn't affect carbonation/conditioning(I'm pretty sure) as the run of the mill procedure is to fill botles with it and let sit for 2-3 hours before emptying and draining. (as I've always done)
Yes it is used in making wine.
But recently I heard the correct way ...

Using Sodium Metabisulphate ?

From what I can gather most guys here are not big big users of this stuff but I was recently told that the way to use it is to make a mix up then put a bit in the bottom of the bottle swirl it round and tip it out as the work is done as it dries off. Tried that today before bottling up my brown ale ...

Hi Dogger,
I actually added 1cup/250ml to this batch.(normally 180ml)
Do you mean get them all cold to slow/stop any more fermentation ?
Also BPJ mentioned stopping the foaming, well they dont actually foam, they are just full of tiny little bubbles and lots of them when poured, they dont foam when ...

What to do with over carbonated batch ?

Gday Guys,
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to deal with an over carbonated batch.
I 'maybe' added a little bit more sugar than usual to bulk prime  cos I wanted a nice refreshing lager, but the grolsch bottles go off like champagne when opened and it's got the mouth feel of ...

Heres a couple of options for you Jay, I've been looking around for the same thing and here are the two recipes I've decided to go with. I'm going to do the lager first and then try the kit, for the same reasons as yourself. (Herself)

2.5 kg light dried malt
10g Golden Cluster hop pellets @ 5 mins ...

Thanks mate, looks like I'll have to learn to culture it to make it a cost effective option, but if the old "quality in, quality out" scenario works here then it sounds like it's worth trying out. I'm of to the HBS

Evo,Dogger and Oliver,
Would one of you guys mind quickly telling us the diiference between a good dry yeast (i.e. like saflager) as opposed to a liquid yeast. Is it that you can culture it easier ? and or a better taste ?
If a dry yeast is rehydrated and then started is it as good as using a ...

Is This a Beer ?

A few weeks ago I boiled up 500g of honey, juice of 1 lemon and some left over hops (10-15g) in 4.5litres and pitched lager yeast (cos I had some)
It fermented out for about a fortnight O.G. 1028 and S.G. 1.000
Well I've just tried one out of interest and it...

Looks like lemonade, clear and lots ...
