It's only taken 10 years, but the site is now up to date and fully responsive (AKA works on phones and tablets).
There's an announcement here.
If you notice anything amiss, please let Oliver know via private message.
Cheers,
Oliver and Geoff

A forum update, at last!
After years of neglecting our beloved homebrewandbeer.com for various reasons, Geoff and I have updated the main site and this forum to the latest and greatest versions of the software.
Probably the most important thing is that both are now responsive (that's tech talk that they now work on mobile ...

Re: Pickaxe Bottles
Hi Rob,
I was up Mildura (Vic) way a month or so ago and picked up a bit of a collection, including a Courage bottle, which I'd never seen before.
I'll post soon ...
Cheers,
Oliver

Re: Site outages and upgrade notifications
Hi guys,
Yes, just been flat out for work so haven't had a chance to sit down and go through this properly. I have tried a couple of things but really need to block out a day where I don't have any interruptions (and don't have a beer, because that doesn't help concentration!).

Re: What are you brewing?
After being in the disgraceful and embarrassing situation of not having brewed since last spring and being without a single bottle of homebrew in the house (Millennium Ale and a couple of imperial stouts notwithstanding) these two bad boys are now in cubes, with yeast to be pitched this evening ...

Interesting. Try and overlook the fact that Coopers is misspelt Coppers several times :-)

Be a beer judge!
If anyone's free on Saturday, February 21, there is an opportunity to judge the homebrew section of the Jindivick Show, east of Melbourne.
There's no requirement to be a qualified judge, so if you know a bit about beer you're in!
I did it a couple of years ago and it was great fun, but due to ...

Re: Site outages and upgrade notifications
Well, that didn't exactly go to plan! We hit some major issues during the upgrade and the forum was offline for three days. The fix would have been quicker but sadly 10-hour days at work got in the way of me fixing it more quickly.
All I can do is apologise ... I tested the upgrade thoroughly ...

Re: Beersmith water
Thanks Tipsy. I am reliably hitting my gravities, using a very dodgy method (namely use 25 litres of mash liquor, set efficiency to 64% in Beersmith, mash, top up to 25 litres then add 2.2 litres/hour for boil-off. Hitting gravities exactly and ending up with about 22 litres of wort.
But it'd be ...

Re: fermenter
The temperature control issue to which DrSmurto refers is, if I am correct, two-fold.
First is the issue of controlling the temperature of such a large volume of liquid. Heating or cooling four smaller fermenters is easier and quicker than doing the same for one large one of the same total volume ...

Re: Heady stout
What was your reasoning for topping it up rather than starting with a volume of 29 litres?
It sounds like the beer had probably finished fermenting when you topped it up. It'd be very difficult -- nay, near impossible! -- to add water without admitting oxygen at this stage, which is not what you ...
