I came here to find an old post of mine, great to see a couple of people posting still.
I learned so much from here.
I suppose fb groups have brought about the demise of great communities like this.

Re: Thinking of going all-grain.
Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with the big pot & converted esky option.
I have to wait until late September before I start buying shiny stuff anyway.

Re: Thinking of going all-grain.
Time is not an issue to be honest, I work from home a couple of days most weeks and I can brew while I work.
I have been brewing extract for about 8 years, but all I have that is transferable is a 10l stainless stockpot which I though would be ok for sparge water.
Plus lots of fermenters etc.

Thinking of going all-grain.
I have decided that it's time to go all-grain. I have put it off for long enough.
I am still undecided between BIAB or the rubbermaid esky method.
The price is not the thing stopping me I just can't decide which one is best.
BIAB looks the easiest and some of the recipes I was looking at call for ...

...so I distilled the first 4 litres of my Tomato Paste Wash.
The smell was much better, strong alcohol fumes and slight sweetness but not the foul decaying smell of the Turbo wash.
One thing though, I noticed the surface of the spirit was specked with a couple of tiny red dots, almost like specks ...

New distillers experience with an Air Still
Against some peoples advice I jumped in and bought an Air Still, I actually got the complete kit from Brewcraft. This included a 10l fermenter, carbon filter cartridges, a plastic filter bucket, an air still and the ingredients for my first 2 washes.
The ingredients were 'Turbo Yeast' based recipes ...

A great combo on asaturday arvo.
The thing about making bugers is it's so easy, just chuck in what you want and mix it up. Don't buy the lip and arse ones from coles.

Re: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
I just spent a couple of weeks in the US, everytime I visit a new country the first thing I do is have a beer (usually inthe airport).
So when I landed in Dallas I headed straight to TGI Fridays and had a pint of SNPA ($7  ) a great beer on draught, very drinkable.

Re: infected beer
I always thought the 'band aid/medicine' flavour came from not rinsing out the cleaning/sterilising products.
I had it in a keg of pale ale one time, I stopped myself from puring it out and I left it in the keg for a year and then tried it again. Foul flavour was still there

500 grams torrefied wheat, steeped for 30 mins in hot water then sparged.
Hey there matey, just wondering what your reasoning was for sparging steeped grains here? After all mostly the wheat is only adding flavor not fermentable sugars isn't it?
I'm no expert but I would be careful doing this as ...

Re: Simple All Extract Pilsner Recipe
I have done another one of these, although I have tweaked it slightly following the advice from Pale_Ale.
3kg Light Liquid Malt
500g Light Dried Malt
100g Saaz (75,15 & 10)
Wyeast 2278 (Czech Pils)
I boiled 4.5 litres of water with the 500g of ldme

I know lager yeasts are slow to start but I thought once it had started (puffed up pack) and was pitched at a suitable temperature with plenty to eat it would just keep going.

Wyeast 2278 - Started and stopped?
I put down an all extract pilsner yesterday.
For the first time ever I used a Wyeast smack pack (2278 Czech Pils). So I gave it a slap early in the morning and left it at room temperature.
I started my brew a bout 4 hours later and the pack was inflated to the point of bursting. :D
