Immersion Chiller
Just managed to pick up 18m of 1/2" annealed copper tubing on ebay for $50.
I will use it to build an immersion chiller to fit into my converted keg boiler.
Any suggestions from others who have built one?
Should i use the entire length or use 10m or so for the main coil and the rest for a smaller ...

Re: First AG
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I am one of those strange Mac users and unfortunately don't have parallels or another emulator so beersmith is no go.
I have been using the trial version of Beer Tools pro and it seems ok although I am still a novice atm.
Just slightly annoyed that final batch ...

Re: First AG
OK......... PROBLEM.
I have ended up with 17 ltrs when i was hoping for around 23-25 into the fermenter.
It has with a gravity reading of 1044.
Did I boil to long? (90 mins)
Not enough mash water? (20ltrs to 5kg of grain)
Not enough sparge water? (13 ltrs)
And can I make it a larger volume by ...

Re: First AG
I live in Wollongong so takes a little while to receive gear from S.A but still very happy with my purchase from BeerBelly.
Plate chiller or immersion chiller might have to be on the to buy list in the future as I think next purchase will have to be a grain mill so I can buy some bulk grain.

Re: First AG
I'd be inclined to cool the wort as much as possible in the kettle first before decanting. That way you keep the break material out (especially the hot break). Also I've read that splashing the hot wort around increases the risk of oxidisation. It just depends on if you can fit your kettle in ...

First AG
Finally got my AG gear together and will attempt my first AG tomorrow.
I have given all the gear and processes a test using water and all seems to be running well.
I am using a 55ltr Willow esky Mash Tun with BeerBelly Falsie (tests show only losing about .5 degrees c with the use of triple layered ...

Re: Mac Brewing Software
give QBrew a look. it's not as full-featured as what you're looking at, and possibly a little less intuitive, but totally free, and cross-platform.
Thanks Keg. Not a fan of QBrew (despite being free) but have found Beer Tools pro through other searches and it seems quite good at around $30 US ...

Re: Mac Brewing Software
I run Beersmith via Parallels on my Mac.
I tried out most (all?) of the Mac brewing options, and in the end decided Beersmith via Parallels was the best option.
Yeah only problem is I don't have a copy of windows. So $100 for parallels and $80 or whatever for windows. Mac native is best for me ...

Mac Brewing Software
I am about to make the move to all-grain (when my equipment arrives!) and I am wondering what other Mac users are using for their brew software.

Re: Cloudy Partial Pils
I have to say, the ingredients you've listed don't sound typically like those in a pils... in fact, I'd wager you get something more along the lines of a lighter-coloured version of a James Squire Golden Ale.
Thanks for the reply. Wasn't massively concerned about brewing to style, just started ...

Re: Partial Extract
A final update on the brew.
Best beer I have made.
The earlier carbonation problems have been solved. I think patience may have been the issue as it turns out the carbonation levels are perfect.
It's not working away crazily like some previous attempts just a nice stream of bubbles and good head ...

Re: Partial Extract
Would you suggest recipe wise to alter the hops. ie. scheduling or amounts?gregb wrote:Hoppiness will mellow over time. How long is very subjective.Angry wrote: And will the hoppyness mellow a bit with maturity and how long till it mellows?
Cheers,
Greg
Or does the recipe otherwise fine?
Thanks

Re: Partial Extract
Just an update on the brew and a couple of follow up questions, if anyone can help.
Been in the bottle just about 2 weeks and just couldn't help myself, so opened one for a taste.
The carbonation is not quite there and I am presuming it has not had enough time yet.
A bit hopier (hoppier?) than ...

Re: Partial Extract
Any idea of the SG for that?
And why did you add the honey after a few days?
Thanks for the welcome.
SG approx 1054 or so I think and added honey later as local HB guy (cheers Al) reckoned that he and other brewers
who had used honey found less of a "burnt caramel" taste when honey was added ...
