Re: Brew in a Bucket

ok. There is condensation, and it bubbled once before. Being only my third brew (the first two having had stuff go everywhere) I was expecting to see the "constant bubbling" that all the instructions talk about. Didn't realise it wasnt so with lagers.

Re: Brew in a Bucket

well its been 4 days now, and the beer hasn't started fermenting yet. There are no bubbles coming out of the air lock. Something is happening because when i push down lon the lid some gas comes through, but thats it!! It has been at 14 degrees constantly.

Thoughts?

Brew in a Bucket

Gday all,

Making a fresh lager today, and I'm experimenting with a new way to keep the fermenter cool. I have a large bucket that I have the fermenter sitting in, and I have filled the bucket up with water and some ice and plan on keep checking it to keep the temp between 10 and 15 degrees.

Has ...

some good ideas there, but can an old fridge and a temp controller keep a fermenter at 20 degrees? I didnt know that fridges could get that warm, let alone maintain that sort of temperature.

I suggest using the kit yeast for the first brew, then experiment from there.

I used the kit yeast for the first one (a tooheys draught). It has been dodgy though, first no fermentation then I checked it on the 3rd day and foam and gunk had come up and through the air lock! put some water back in ...

Thanks rwh. I guess the next question is which yeast? Use the one that comes with the mix or buy something seperately?

NO - this will kill it (too hot).
What if I let it cool down to an ideal temp?

Cheers Regan. What about getting liquid yeast's?

Also what is the best way of adding the yeast to the mix? Mix the wort with the water in the fermenter and dump it on top, mix it in with the wort on the stove before putting it into the fermenter with the water, giving it a kickstart then putting it ...
