Re: Alcohol content
Thanks for helping. I keep a steady temp. of 67 c for the hour and stir it for a couple of minutes every 20 minutes. I now understand about the efficiency, thanks. I take the hydro. reading prior to pitching the yeast which is approx.22 c and as far as I know my hydro. is accurate as I have two of ...

Re: Alcohol content
G'day,
It would be quicker for me to drive over to your place than to put what you said onto this sight. I make 60L brews. I mash in an 85L Esky at 67 C for an hour. I use a dried American Ale yeast. I have temp control and ferment for about a week before I drop the temp to drop out the yeast. I ...

Alcohol content
G'day men,
When I brew a beer I generally hit the starting gravity that the recipe states on Beersmith. But my finishing gravity is always a bit lower. This means that the alcohol content comes out higher; well I think that means it does. So instead of making a 4.8% beer, I tend to get a 5.3% beer ...

Making more yeast
G'day men,
I have a packet of ale yeast and was wondering if I can turn that amount of yeast into more yeast(say 3 times as much) I've farmed the yeast from the fermenter before, but I was wondering if I can multiply what I have from the dried stage?

Re: help with SG reading
I did the recipe using beersmith. Why does it say pre-boil SG 1.043 and then say Original Gravity 1.055. My pre-boil was 1.052 and I don't know what my OG is yet because I haven't put it in the fermenter yet. Beersmith gives me all these wonderful figures but it doesn't tell me what they mean and ...

help with SG reading
G'day men,
Just did an all grain pilsner and the pre-boil SG was supposed to be 1.043, but it was 1.052. What does this mean in terms of my effeciency? Am I going to be able to drink it? I still get a bit confused with SG readings. Can someone please explain how they work and in an easy to ...

bittering hops
G'day men,
How much flavour comes from hops used for bittering(boiled for 60 minutes) I have read that the actual flavour is lost and only the bitterness comes through. If this is the case, then why do we use different types of hops for bittering? Why not use the cheapest? John Palmer, in his book ...

boiling extract
G'day men,
If my pot is big enough, is it alright to boil the full amount instead of adding the water at the end into the fermenter?

freezer size?
G'day men,
I am in the process of buying a chest freezer off ebay to put my kegs in. What size freezer do I need to fit 3 or 4 kegs. I thought I'd look like an idiot carting a keg around Harvey Norman and dropping it in his new freezers to get an idea!

recipe for extract IPA please
G'day men,
I have about 10kg of dry malt(given to me!) I want to use some of it to make an IPA. I would also like to steep some grains to give a better flavour. Does anyone have a recipe that fits the bill. To those people that helped me with a pilsner recipe, I'm putting it down this Friday. I'll ...

Re: does anyone have an all grain pilsner recipe
I just converted one of the recipes to a 60 L batch and it works out that I need 426 g of saaz hops all up. It sounds a lot. Would that be right?

does anyone have an all grain pilsner recipe
G'day men,
I've made a few ales and now I want to have a go at doing a pilsner. I have a fermentation fridge and I'll be putting it into kegs. Does anybody have a recipe using saaz hops?
Thanks

Re: Changing pre-boil gravity
Thanks,
So if the measurements were the other way, I would do the same calculation and add some malt. So if I wanted 1.050 and got 1.039 I would just reverse that formula and add the amount of malt needed. Have I got that right?
