What a find, Planner,
I use "hand me down" milk crates donated by another brewer on this forum.
I have never been able to work out why milk crates aren't sold. Coming from a musical background I am aware of them being "rehoused" by roadies since the 70's. There is no product to match them on the ...

Re: yucky brews!
Anna,
I'm another bleach user. I hose out the fermenter then thoroughly clean with (Chux) cloth, bleach and tap water. Inspect the fermenter for any slight "brown" specks and then let the sun do its job. 24 hours outside and the bleach smell has gone.

Re: Summer Temp control for $16.00
Well I got some foam today anyway so I can now plug the top of the cooler trapping in the cool and achieving better and more even temps I'd say. Turns out my brand new wrapped in plastic cooler had some loose stitching hence the leak. Some tape and its all good though.

Check that the drainage plug is screwed tight. Mine didn't leak at all.

Hey Grog,
I had a quick look at your product.
Keep us posted on how it's going. Also how did you connect it into the system?
I ask this as there is a possibility that some space could become available at my place for a fridge.
cheers
Alan

Re: Summer Temp control for $16.00
Alright Al you have me convince and the overlord here is happy there is no more dripping towells on the floorboards.
I shall pick one up soon. I know you use the shorter more squat coopers fermenters so does anyone use a cooler bag yet with the taller brewcraft type of fermenters?

Re: Summer Temp control for $16.00
Well I went to Bunnings last night and - happy days - they had 2 of the YELLOW collapsible coolers left! So my two fermenters are now sitting happily in the spare room with frozen softdrink bottles all around them and my bath is once again free (maybe I'll have a nice long soak tonight - haven't ...

Re: Summer Temp control for $16.00
OMG! This is brilliant! I love the idea of not submerging the fermenters and being able to access the taps for readings. The cooler you speak of - I've only seen the blue collapsible coolers (silver inside) at Bunnings and Big W. They are round with a zip lid. Are these what you mean (I wouldn't ...

Re: Summer Temp control for $16.00
Hi Finnagann,
I found that 5 x 600ml of frozen water gave me 8 hours of cooling when the room temperature ranged from 22C to 30C over a period of 8 hours. I have heard that people have had good results using 2 x 2 litres over a day with similar setups.

Summer Temp control for $16.00
Hi guys and gals,
This will interest those who have limited space and funds but would like to brew through summer.
I have conducted an experiment over the last 8 days to see if I could brew at under 20C in Melbourne's variable summer climate.
The answer is a resounding YES!
The total outlay was ...

Re: Beer in the bath!
I back Throsby up 100% in regard to sanitising the tap after you have taken the fermenters out of the bath. (Not that I am an older and wiser mind.)
Your solution is one that I envy, mainly cos our baths double as shower spaces.
Luckily for me it is a comfortable 18.2C in my brew room at the ...

Well done.
I've only had one mistake go a bit awry on me. All the others turned out to be improvements on the original recipe/idea.
Cheers

Hydro reading of 1.016) I am now not to sure again as it seems to have gone back to 1.020 seems (odd) is this normale?
OK, Chrisp,
You can't get a hydro reading of 16 then it go back to 20. If the hydrometer sank to 1016 then it must have clear enough fluid for it to do so. Gunk can be ...

Re: newby needs help! is it stuck?
Don't worry, it'll settle down again.
There are many brewers who leave the fermenter alone for a week after reaching FG, I'm one of them, to let things settle and give the yeast time to clean up after itself.
I have had brews that did not reach FG stage for three weeks or so. ( The exception rather ...

Re: newby needs help! is it stuck?
Hi Chrisp,
Welcome to the forum.
At 1020 you would be a bit high as an FG. It looks to me as if you are stuck.
A couple of suggestions.
1) Give the fermenter a gentle swirl to get some of the yeast back up into suspension.
2) Bump up the temperature to about 20 / 21C to help reactivate the yeast ...

Re: Ah well, we live and learn
Onya Anna,
Another thing with the dark beers, they are sipping beers. Not recommended for a big thirst quench on a hot day.
Did a Chimay style about 9 months ago and my father swears it is the best beer he has ever tasted. Raves about it to all that listen.
Cheers

Anna,
You might have a great beer there.
I am not familiar with the kit you used but I've done the British Bitter and it horrifies my neighbour, a VB fanatic. I find it great, but I do drink it at a much warmer temperature than a lager or a pale ale. The flavour is a lot better then.
