Re: Frothing Beer
Gushers as Bullfrog are usually a sign of infection. Where do you live? In cooler climates 7 days may not be enough and the yeast may stop working. The same will happen if it gets too hot. You will get 2 days of stable readings but the beer may not have fully fermented. Extra fermentation in the ...

Re: Yeast reuse
Step 5: Yes, wait till the fermentation has completed and the yeast has dropped. Once it has used all the starter malt it has reproduced and multiplied into many more yeast cells before dropping to the bottom when the food/malt runs out. Putting it in the fridge makes the yeast drop to the bottom ...

Doc,
Without having to go back through the 13 pages of this post; can I ask if you rack this beer and if so when? I find that the 1469 krausen takes forever and a day to drop.
Cheers

In my planned experiment, yes I'm definitely using pet bottles. I was planning to use my hydrometer and add juice to bring it back up to 1010 in a demijohn (small batch experiment). I too like the dry cider, this experiment is to see if extra flavour can be added without additional sweetness as is ...

Re: Cider
Earl, I'm yet to do this, but with my all juice ciders (for my wife) as they ferment dry the apple taste is also stripped, so next time I'm going to prime 1/2 the pet bottles with unfermented apple juice. I've read that even know this juice will ferment out to carb, it adds some apple taste back to ...

Nah, just throw your whole amount of hops into the boil you make to 1.040. There is some discussion as to boil size affecting hop utilisation but I never had any problems and I was doing 10L boils.

Re: 2nd AG - lager yeast.
If my memory serves me correctly, I think it was Palmer in his first book who suggested that you need to rack the beer off the yeast. He has since retracted that statement somewhat by suggesting that it is only applicable in large scale breweries where the shear weight of the yeast on itself leads ...

Re: Syphon issue
Aggree with Squirt. I also use braid and if you try to drain too fast then it will suck all of the grain in around the braid and you will get a stuck sparge. By going the bigger diameter hose you more than likely compounded the issue by creating a bigger syphoning volume which would pull more liquid ...

I click on the yeast on the craft brewer site and then more info. They list the recommended procedures for most yeasts.

Does anyone else feel guilty about the amount of water chillers use? In my case the water would be going straight down the drain as we have no garden worth speaking of.

Re: Can't maintain temperature during distillation.
Can you post a pic of where the thermometer sits in the column. Between 79 and 84 degrees seems problematic to me as whilst alcohol evaporation point is @79 degrees I've always run stills at 93C. If been doing it infrequently over too many years to remember where I first got that number or it could ...
