Re: 50L Keg conversion to a HLT

My set up is:

Keg -cut out top yourself with angle grinder with cutting disc (See you tube for method - search for keggle).
2 X 2000W elements - I got two made for stills sold in NZ that had screw / weldless fittings and leads (about $40NZ each if I recall). I have them on two seperate circuits in ...

Re: Freezing Malt Extract

I've also heard that a computer keyboard has more germs than a toilet seat... so I guess my brew is at risk if I use BeerSmith too much on brew day

I'vce realised everything that comes out of a freezer should really be thoroughly cooked and I guess this will be no different and the extract ...

Thanks Guys, I reckon the risk is low, and it'll be boiled when I use it so I'll go for it.

Cheers

Re: Safale US-04

No reason why you couldn't leave the hydrometer in the fermentor but several things I'd be wary of;

1) make sure it is sanitised!
2) bubbles could form on the Hydrometer lifting it and giving a false reading.
3) Would be sods law that it floats to the edge and get stuck in the crap on the side of ...

Re: Siphon Basics

You must be drawing air from somewhere. The larger outer tubing should create a stronger suction.

Thanks. The pick up tube is attached with a compression fitting and olive (kinco Style), I'll have another look at that to check all is sweet and air tight... but I wouldn't have to use any thread ...

Siphon Basics

Hi All,

Having a little trouble getting the last few litres to siphon from my Keg HLT, pick-up tube, the water doesn't seem to want to go below the tap level.

The 12mm copper pick up tube forms a good seal to the Tap so I don't think air is drawing in... I think my problem is the pipe I have on ...

Re: beerbelly hopscreen

Thanks Guys,

If its as good as you say I'm sold... hope the shiping to NZ isnt too steap (excuse pun  )

Might just have to make a worthwhile purchase and get a plate chiller too.

I'm modeling my set up similar to some of you guys (2 Kegs - Rubermaid Chilly bin) I think so your previous ...

beerbelly hopscreen

Hi Guys, I'm thinking of ordering one of these... what are they like when using hop pellets?
Do they keep the outflow clean enough to pass through a plate chiller?

Cheers!

Hot Water Cylinder as HLT

Hi Guys,

Anyone ever use a domestic Hot Water Cylinder for a HLT in an all grain set up?

I can get a decent priced 44 litre cylinder with 2KW element that can be set to 80C+ on a thermostat... just wondering if anyone else has gone this route... any problems???

Cheers

Re: Home Grown Hops Advice needed

Should be the perfect time of year.

I moved a few years back at this time of year (in NZ) and yes you can just cut the vines back and dig up the rhizomes.

I found I could actually dig out the main plant and also divide off a few new plants that had rooted arround it, so in the end I potted up 3-4 ...

RE: Orange flavour.

When I have needed this in the past I have tried all sorts of orange products but the only thing that gives reliable results is Triple Sec Essence (from HBS, spirit flavouring section) 6 - 12ml (half to whole bottle!) depending on taste gives me good repeatable results...

Also ...

Yep, I've heard that theory and the opposite, That freezers are used to working much harder, so asking them to keep at 10 deg is easier on them.

All I can add is that I've used the current set up for 2 years and the freezer must be at least 15 years old... with no problems... and the price was ...

I normally only measure SG when I'm racking and about to bottle :-)

As was suggested I have the fermenter raised up from the bottom of the freezer on blocks and just reach in and take a sample.

Chest Freezers are good IMHO because even if the have a crappy seal, cold air by it very nature sinks ...
