Mid strength APA

Postby jords » Saturday Feb 05, 2011 2:05 pm

Hi all

I want to make a mid-strength, easy to drink beer.

I want to start brewing full extract so this is what I have in mind.

2.5 kg LDM
15g Cascade @ 1hr
15g Cascade @ 20
15g Cascade @ 10
15g Cascade @ Flameout

23L boil (approx) and US-05 Yeast.

My main question is regarding the hopping, I have no idea how much to use and when so I just guessed. How does my hop schedule look?

I'm after a balanced beer that still has flavour, despite the simple ingredient list.

Any comments would be welcome.

Cheers

Looks pretty decent for a SMaSH beer, Jords. It would be hard to predict the result without knowing the AA% of your Cascade but, if it's in the higher AA range for that hop (~6-7%) then you should have something pretty balanced, I'd say. Easy to throw back, in any case. If the AA% is lower then you may want to consider upping your quantities of hops to compensate for that.

Cheers, had better put it down and see then. Haven't picked up the hops yet so I'll check it and compensate accordingly.

Will let you know how it turns out.

I just did a mid strength apa,

It was a bit of a test for when i want to do xxxx gold clone,
23litres
Coopers lager tin
150g dark crystal malt
350g ldme
400g dextrose
10g cluster @ 20min
10g cluster@ flameout
Us05 yeast

Ibu is about 28, 3.5% once primed in bottles.

Once i get a fridge i will use same recipe but with some sort of lager yeast and do a propper lager process in secondary for 2 weeks to create my intended xxxx clone.

For now i made a very nice mid strength apa,
All Grain - Still learning with Every Batch.

I admit to drinking XXXX Gold for a fair while, although I'm not sure I would aim to duplicate it.
I really enjoy the extra flavour I get from my low abv brews, I am all grain though.
Sorry for pointless post :D
