Lemongrass

Postby BadSeed » Sunday Jun 24, 2007 2:33 pm

I have a huge bunch of this growing in the garden. I was thinking of putting a couple of stalks in the boil and making a lemongrass Cerveza. Has anyone tried adding lemongrass to beer?
It has a nice citrus taste and smell, but maybe a bit overpowering.
Anyone had a go?

I haven't used lemongrass in beer, but I do a lot of asian cooking and grow my own too. It has an intense lemon flavour and aroma but it's not sharp in anyway like citurs zest and juice. I think you should try it but just use about three stalks. I'm sure it will add an interesting aroma to your Cerveza that shouldn't be all that overpowering. It will probably contribute more to aroma than directly to the taste. If you use too much, however, it may add a slightly soapy flavour to your brew.
Prost!!!!!!!!!!!

I've used it once, but did not like it. I used 4 stalks (about 30cm long each).

It was simply too much. If you are going to do it, at LEAST halve the quantity I used.

where do you boys live to be able to have stuff still goring in your garden.? Frost here has killed off all the vegies and most of the chooks.

You could add a small amount of lime zest/juice to the boil as well as the lemongrass. One of those things on my 'to do list' which gets longer by the day

I'm in the Perth hills. My chooks are still alive and producing an egg each a day. Lemongrass is a bit stunted and brown as it doesn't like the cold too much. Broad beans are coming up and the lettuces and herbs are thriving. I always find chucking my beer sediment onto the plants gives them a good lift too. But I guess we don't really get a full frost here during winter.

Last brewday up here at a mates place, we were cutting the lemongrass stalks, giving them a little mash & then stirring our APA's with it - intense lemon flavour, worked surprisingly well - but then we were all pissed by then :D

cheers Ross

The lemongrass is in a nice warm spot against a wall, with the old gladwrap glasshouse on it.

Dragging up an old thread, but has anyone had success with lemongrass in homebrew?

Watching this thread too, only plants I've got are actually some lemongrass. Interesting aroma !
Might try something unorthodox on a few bottles, dry-leafing..
Do lemongrass have the same antiseptic-like qualities that hops do have ?

Skål :D !
