This recipe sounds really interesting and one that I'd like to try out!

The biggest pot I have a 5L pot - would someone be able to either

a) help me out with hop schedule etc for this or - preferably

b) tell me how to work it out myself using beersmith. I just bought beersmith and am working my way around it but am not overly familiar with the software yet.

Thanks guys!

Same hop schedule, but use only the 500g of LDME in the boil ;)

EDIT: I didn't read my own recipe

The way I worked it out in Beersmith was to;

1) Set your boil volume to what you want eg: 4L

2) Work out what fermentables you require for a 4L boil http://homebrewandbeer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7834&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit#p78670

3) add that to beersmith eg 450grms LDME

4) add the rest of the LDME (50grms) to beersmith as a separate item but check the box " Add after boil"

5) Make sure all other items are marked "add after boil" as well

6) If you are using kits then you will have to add them to the Grains & Extracts menu (New Grain or Extract) as an Extract and adjust the Hop grams to adjust the IBU's for the kits (Check the add after boil for these too)

Doing this will ensure you are not affecting the IBU's of the kits and the IBU's of your boil is correct.

I'm pretty sure this is the right way to do it??? Just bought Beersmith myself and this is what I have worked out within the last week. Hope it works for you.. :)

Cheers, Mat.

Kevnlis wrote:I would use:

2x 1.5 kilo tins of LLME
500g LDME

For hopping, in a full 26L boil add the following:

10g Chinook @ 60 min
15g Amarillo @ 20 min
15g Cascade @ 20 min
10g Amarillo Dry Hopped in Secondary
10g Cascade Dry Hopped in Secondary

I brewed an all grain version based on Kevnils hop schedule, with the exception of subbing the dry hops at flame out.

It is a cracka. Will now become a brew always on tap.

I have used cascade extensively, but have never used amarillo and chinook before.Wow what a beautiful combo. On the back
of this result I will be trying more USA hops in different styles

The flame out addition is probably the better way to go anyway, you lose the volitile components of the hops yet keep most of the aroma and get a bit of flavour.

You could always dry hop the keg as well. I have done this several times and it has always worked great!

You are unlikely to get a reply from hoohaaman, as he hasn't been on the forum since May last year.

I've never consumed Crackenback, so I have no idea what it is like.

I can give you the recipe for my last APA, which turned out very nice.

23 litres. Brewhouse Efficiency 83% (you may need to lower that for your system).

4000.00 gm Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (5.9 EBC) Grain 82.30 %
500.00 gm Munich 2 (25.0 EBC) Grain 10.29 %
120.00 gm Crystal Dark (260.0 EBC) Grain 2.47 %
120.00 gm Crystal Malt - 60L (Thomas Fawcett) (118.2 EBC) Grain 2.47 %
120.00 gm Crystal Medium (145.0 EBC) Grain 2.47 %
25.00 gm Magnum [14.00 %] (60 min) (First Wort Hop) Hops 39.8 IBU
35.00 gm Cascade '07 [6.30 %] (10 min) Hops 8.3 IBU
35.00 gm Cascade '09 [7.40 %] (0 min) Hops -
23.00 gm Chinook [11.40 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops -
1.00 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 10.0 min) Misc
12.00 gm Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate) (Boil 60.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs American Ale US-05 (Fermentis #US-05) Yeast-Ale

Mashed 60 minutes at 66ºC.
