One of my porter'ish recipes

Post by homebrewer79 »

Recently I sent one of my beers to Drsmurto as a thank you because he was kind enough to part with a couple of packs of his dry yeast, cheers mate the munich is working away as we speak :D . He suggested I post the recipie so others could give it a whirl, so here it is

1x Beermakers Old
1.5kg DDME
100g Dex (just to up the alc/vol)
200g Maltodextrin (I only put this in to get rid of what I had, but ask Doc, the head does not go)
300g choc malt steeped 30 mins
5g chinook @60 min
5g chinook @20 min
5g chinook @5 min
yeast US-05 (I actually used 2 kit yeasts but would normally use US-05)

Hops are boiled in DDME, and the rest (not the kit) added just before the 5 min addition

Made to 23, est OG- 1058, est FG-1019, Alc/vol 5.9%.

For some reason my gravities were quite different and I ended up with 5% alc/vol but hey, it's a fairly good drop for a kit brew.
Next time I make it (in about 2 weeks) I will use LDME and up the choc to 500g and will finish off the hopping with some fuggles or EK goldings.

Hope this gets you drinkin :)
Thats it, you people have stood in my way long enough, I'm going to clown college

Ooo, interesting. I've got some choc malt and some leftover chinook. I'm getting back into dark ales after the Winter Lagerfest '08, so I might give this a go...

Ive used amarillo and cascade in porters before so reckon chinook will work fine. Being the hop head that i am i would have gone for 20g additions at 20 and 5 mins as i didnt get much in the way of the none too subtle passionfruit you get from chinook. Next time maybe...

Am surprised that you got so much choc/coffee oomph into the beer with only 300g.....

I have > 500g each of fuggles and EKG - they go very well in dark ales/porters!

And yes, i did enjoy this beer, nice big head and i got a fair way of choc/coffee out of it. Nice easy drinker sitting next to the fire at this time of year!
