Yeah I found that mine was very hoppy at first, but between age 3 weeks and 6 weeks the hops faded alot, now its much better. still got the aroma and hop flavour just not so overpowering. At first I only ever had 2 or 3.. Now that the hops have mellowed a bit I drank the over half the brew in a night! I gotta brew some more.

Just thought I'd get on and say that the beer is now tasting fantastic. I had a fat yak on tap the other day down at the Waterside Hotel in Melbourne and then went home and cracked one of mine. Mine is Fat Yak on steroids but the same taste is there! Now a great brew.

Well, the following has been in bottle for 2 weeks now, and although it's a bit early, I cracked one when I got home from work...

Coopers Real Ale
1kg LDME
200g crystal steeped
15g Cascade @ 10 min
10g Nelson Sauvin @ 5 min
US-05
Made to 24l

I haven't got a bottle of Fat Yak on hand to compare this with, however if memory serves me well this is a bloody good approximation of the beer I had on tap all those months ago. I think I'll have to brew this again immediately as once my co-workers get their hands on it, my supplies will vanish fast.

Love this brew, maybe a little heavy for more than 2 or 3 but will be making this one again soon.

Botted this version last week, subbing cascade for amarillo. Can't wait to try it. Never tried a real ale as a base before and haven't used coopers yeast for ages. Taste test very soon!

I've now tested this side by side with the real deal, and I think I can definitely pick a few differences. The homebrew version is slightly darker in colour and the head retention is better. I also reckon the hops taste fresher and come through more cleanly in my version.

Needless to say, I don't think I'll be buying any more Fat Yak...

Nice one. I guess there's no point in buying beer when your brew is better! :D :D

Had my bro-i-l and mrs bro-i-l for lunch yesterday. Gave him one of my hefeweizens. His reaction was "you're getting good at this, this is as good as a bought one". My reply , "better". He said it didn't taste like homebrew. I told him that was because it wasn't homebrewed, it was "craftbrewed", exactly the same as the boutique brewers". GeeWhiz, after spending 6 hours or so over a brew, I'd want it to taste at least as good as a bought one.

I sampled a few of the Bobbioti Fat Yak recipe this weekend, 10 days old in bottle. Very nice and without a side by side test I would say it's pretty damn close. Test will be leaving it long enought to mature.

Just had a look at the Brewcraft online store & the pic of the Fat Yak #2 kit has a can of Black Rock something in it?????? NOT the Coopers Real Ale? Is this a mistake (i.e. its a pic of thier first Fat Yak attempt) or is it supposed to be BR? & if so which one????
Thanks in advance...Bart

My clone and a lot of others have Coopers Real Ale. In reality after you have added malts, crystal and a good whack of hops little of the kits characteristic will come through with the exception of the bitterness. With that in mind if the Black Rock ?? kit has a different IBU to the real ale you may need to adjust your hopping schedule accordingly. Not sure many brewcraft clones would have a coopers kit so this is probably their equivalnet choice.

Here's another version of my Fat Yak recipe. Although the cascade is subbed with amarillo in this recipe, the result tastes extremely close to Fat Yak, perhaps even closer than my first effort. I can't work out why, but it's a good drop anyway...

Coopers Real Ale
1kg LDME
200g crystal steeped
10g Amarillo @ 10 min
10g Nelson Sauvin @ 5 min
US-05
Made to 23l
