Ginger Beer hydro reading

Postby yellow » Saturday Apr 22, 2006 10:31 am

Hey guys, just got into homebrewing and love it. On my second brew and doing a Cooper Ginger Beer alcoholic brew with 1 kg of raw sugar.

Just wondering, both my brews have never bubbled through th airlock, but that is fine cause there is condensation on the inside of the lid and a brown ring on the line of the brew etc.

But when taking a final gravity reading on my ginger beer brew it comes out at 10.02 is that too low? I mean will it still be alcoholic The brew has been on just under 7 days. The initial reading was around 10.30 or so.

Thanks for any help

Relax. Don't worry....

That sounds fine. The lower the final gravity, the more sugar has been turned into alcohol. Remember, you can compute the %alv v/v by dividing the change in gravity by about 7.5 (i.e. (30 - 2)/7.5 ~= 3.7% alc v/v).

Hope this helps,
Tom

Yellow,

This sounds OK.

In fact, some (all?) wine has an SG of below 1.000/1000 when it's finished fermenting. The further the SG falls, the more alcohol is in the beer/wine/ginger beer.

Remember, too, that there are artificial sweeteners in the ginger beer, which no doubt result in a lower SG than if there was, say, malt.

Hi Yellow,
You'll love the ginger beer.
Mine has a real earthy ginger flavour with a great bite in the aftertaste!
Very refreshing.
