Discard or Not to Discard

Postby Eureka » Monday Dec 11, 2006 4:48 pm

I was given a box of home brew stuff from a friend of mine.

It contained:

1 can of Brigalow Apple Cider, best before March 05 (certainly not a favourite)
1 bag of Cooper's Brew Enhancer No. 1 (best before Oct 05)

I guess the yeast will be no good so therefore a trip to the HB shop will yield a packet of yeast that will set me back $5.

So is it worth my time using them or are they better in the bin?

I seriously doubt the BE would be off, but I wouldn't take the risk.

For the amount of work that's involved to clean and sterilize the fermenter and bottles, bottle and wait for the result plus your already buying new yeast I'm amazed your even considering saving $7 for the risk. Use the bloody stuff as fertilizer on the vegie patch. You might get $30 worth of tomatoes :)

Cheers, Geoff.

Why not give the m a try? Seriously who decides best by dates considering evrything is sealed. The only suspect thing would be the yeast and that can be tested.

If it was a use-by date, I'd say turf the lot. But that sort of stuff just doesn't go off, hence the "best before" date instead.

Turf the yeast though, as it may be suspect, and buy one from your homebrew shop just to be sure.

Cheers,

Oliver

the brew enhancer should definitely be ok. the cider? open the can and take a smell. if it smells right, it's probably fine. i wouldn't trust the yeast though, as mentioned.

cheers
