non alcoholic GB

Postby sonictruth » Wednesday Mar 07, 2007 10:22 pm

hey guys,
i usually brew beer but im keen to give the GB a go. I want to try non alcoholic. Im assuming that the instructions on the side of the kit wont give that great a result so does anyone have any suggestions/recipes?

i was going to just try to use the kit and throw in say 500gms of grated ginger. I want a nice gingery outcome like a bundaberg or similar

thanks

Can't help you with the recipe, but just throw in enough sugar to prime the kit, then bottle shortly thereafter.

I've never done a non alcoholic ginger beer but of the stock standard kit ginger beers I've done Morgans has been good!
The standard ginger levels are pretty good....but I really like my ginger so I would definatly add some extra fresh ginger next time!
Maybe even look up yardglasses ginger beer recipe and get some ideas from that as to what you can add to your non alcoholic ginger beer.

What GB kit is it? I know that the Coopers one has both alcoholic and non-alcoholic instructions on the side. I can post them if you want as I've got a kit at home that I never seem to get around to actually making (too many beers to make). :)

Yeah, I've got 4 of them. Got them VERY cheaply at Harris Scarf at Highpoint a while back.

From my limited understanding of the GB kits, it contains 4/5th of sweet FA (dont get me started about artifical sweeteners...... ) A bit of ginger flavouring and no sugar. So if you want to make a non alco version mix it with water, add whatever other spices you want - for bundaberg GB clone i would suggest some lemon, a few cloves, cinnamon stick and then prime your bottles as usual, wait 2 weeks and voila! It if were me :P i would forget the kit and use fresh ginger. Will be cheaper and give you a tastier end product, just add a little lactose for sweetness, say 250g for a 15L batch. If you are lactose intolerant then your screwed, you need the kit with its artificial sweetening chemicals. 8)

My 2 cents

Do a search. You should find quite a few. I've posted at least one in the past myself (I think).

Plenty of good recipes for GB on here so do a search as Chris said and omit the fermentables. Only add 180g of dextrose for a 23L batch and bottle straight away.

The recipe i use is 750g - 1kg of fresh ginger, skin and pureed in a food processor. Add say 500g of lactose. 2 lemons, chopped, skin and all. 8 cloves, 1 cinnamon stick. Boil all this up in about 4L of water for an hour and strain into fermenter. Add the dextrose, top up to 23L, stir in a yeast (ale or cider) and bottle immediately. Should be carbed up in 2 weeks.

Cheers
