Too much hops, weird smell?

Postby OldBugman » Monday Jan 08, 2007 7:32 pm

Well I put down a brew last week as follows

5.5kg of pilsner grain
500g carapils

was aiming for a 1055ish SG but broke my hydro the night before  , which sucks cos I was testing a way of fly sparging rather than the batch sparging I had been doing

Hops

Super Alpha 11.2% 15g 60min 27.1 IBU
Saaz 3.3% 15g 30min 4.1 IBU
Saaz 3.3% 15g 20min 2.7 IBU
Saaz 3.3% 15g 10min 1.6 IBU
Saaz 3.3% 15g 0min 0 IBU

Used kolsch yeast and it seemed quite slow to take off but once it did it was very ferocious. But the smells was nice from a distance but up close it STUNK. Now that fermentation has slowed ofcourse the brewery no longer stinks so much and the airlock smells a little nicer.

I just wonder if too much saaz has caused this smell
opinions?

I guess the proof will be in the drinking.

Not that I pay much attention to brewhouse odours, but I shouldn't think that it's from the Saaz. I've not noticed anything unusual from using similar amounts. Wonder if the odour is just normally generated by the yeast? I'll take a guess that's the most likely.

The hop schedule looks nice :D Bet it'll be a nice drop.

Cheers, Ed

Well after making up another beer yesterday and a starter to go along with it I pitched the yeast from the starter then stuck my nose in the bottle. Thats the smell.
