First Partial

Postby PaulSteele » Friday Jun 27, 2008 8:56 am

Ok, I'm about to put in an order for grains and malt for my first partial recipe.

my shopping cart contains:

2kg Joe White ale Malt
1kg LDME
100g Amarillo
Danstar Windsor Ale yeast

Is this enough?

should I forget that Danstar yeast and pick up a Saf -US-05 from the LHBS?

Note: I have loads of specialty grains in the fridge.

It's probably enough if you want to do only an 18 litre batch.
If you want a 23 litre batch, up the LDME to 1.5 kg. Alternatively use the 1 kg LDME plus ½ kg of dry wheat malt extract.

The style you want to brew should determine the yeast you choose. Seeing as you plan to use Amarillo, I'd suggest the US05 is more suitable to an APA style, whereas the Windsor is more suited to English pale ales or bitters.

You might want to add say 100 to 200 gr crystal to your mix, to give you a bit more body and malt character. If you want a beer with a little more colour, add about 50 to 100 gr of choc malt.

I'm not too fussed about style, but I'm expecting something like an APA out of this one.

i really want to just see what Partial brewing is all about and I'm not expecting anything better than drinkable out of it.

19L
2 kg grain for the mash
1.5-2kg LDME
200g crystal
possibly some chocolate grain for colour
30g Amarillo @ 60
20g Amarillo @ 20
20g Amarillo @ 5
US-05 yeast

I have placed an order with Beerbelly based on your raving recommendations, Dr. S

With due care in the mash Paul, this should turn out to be quite a nice APA...Recommend you mash for 60 mins at around 66-68C for a nice APA.

Cheers,
TL

Looks good. I would mabe use a can of liquid malt and 500grms to 1kg of dry. Either way let us know how you go
Ah, beer, my one weakness. My Achille's heel, if you will.
