How long does a gas bottle last?????????

Postby Clean Brewer » Thursday Aug 21, 2008 9:08 pm

Hello all,

How long would most say a 9kg gas bottle last them when doing AG, say based on a single batch, just want to work out if I should get a 9kg bottle to go with the 4.5kg bottle ive got..

I swap mine from the BBQ to my AG set up on a needs basis, but it lasts between 6 months to a year depending on how many brews or bbq's I have. I'd guess that 9kg would get me through 8 brews, but I've never measured it so I could be way off. I'd get the 9kg anyway though so as to have a spare for when one gas bottle runs out. Very embarassing at bbq's and very annoying on a brew day I'd suppose. Reminds me to go and get a second gas bottle. Cheers

I picked up 2 x 9kg bottles (full) for $50 a piece. As soon as one runs out, time to refill.

And if you have a 4.5kg (as I do too) DO NOT get it filled- it cost almost as much as a 9kg refill in most places! Refill yourself from a 9kg. DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING THOUGH!!!

Same as you chris, i have 2 9kg bottles and just fill one as soon as it runs out, this way you always have backup supplies so you will never get stuck half way through a boil.

Yep, 2 x 9kg bottles. One on the bbq which is pinch when i run out on the 'brewing' bottle but as my local refiller is over my back fence i refill them as soon as they empty.

I fond i get ~10-12 brews. I boil for 90 mins but turn the NASA down to a dull roar once the boil is reached.

I've have 2 x 18kg bottles (it's a phallic thing)

I pay rental on one.
One refill and a years rental is not much more than 2 x 9kg refills

You can rent LPG bottles? Surely it's cheaper to buy outright?

I've found for my usage it is cheaper for me to rent

when I changed over it was around $4o for a 9kg swap n go (no one fills them around this area anymore)

I pay $40 for an 18kg and $40 rental. If I use 18kg per year I break even, if I use more I save

Swap and go is a rip-off. I've never heard of rental, but in your case it sounds like the go.

I guess I'm lucky I can get a 9kg refill for $16.

I know a good place in Sydney, then I go to Bunnings and price match for the 10% discount.

Don't know about QLD, but in NSW there is a place called West Ryde Ethanol.

It is a bit of a moot point though, as Bunnings is about to get rid of refills. The bastards are going exclusively with swap and go. I really wish the ACCC actually had the balls to go against big business.

Oh well, at leat WRE will be getting my business in the future. I always hated Bunnings and now I have absolutely no reason to ever go there again.

Well, ill ring around anyhow and ill ask my bunnings the same question, id dare say they all would be doing the same thing..... :x

I heard the same about power tools aswell, they were going to be just exclusively RYOBI and whatever other Brands Ryobi Owns, sure enough, all I see now is basically all RYOBI...

Anyhow, thats Big Business... :?

The Ryobi thing works for me... I'll never buy Ryobi, so I'll never go to Bunnings. A dodgey brand (for power tools) for a dodgey store.

This is exactly the reason businesses like mine increase prices, to match Bunnings

Yeah, I know. I always feel bad when I've gone there. Just like when I go to Coles or Woolworths. Thankfully that is becoming increasingly rarer.

Yes, they are all f---ing rip offs in my eyes yet the general public just dont seem to care, buying pre-packed lettuce, tubbed up slimy fruit salad, pre packed meat etc etc, yet they come to my Restaurant and complain about the prices of Good, well cooked food??????????

Anyhow, there is quite a few places that do refills in this country coastal town and I will get onto it tomoz and see the difference in prices...

Back on the gas bottles. it's time for another dumb question.
how much does an empty gas bottle & a full gas bottle weigh?
Does a 9kg gas bottle mean it holds 9kg, or is that the empty weight?
Are gas gauges worth it?
