Unknown hardware/What is this?

Postby Cadbury » Thursday Mar 12, 2009 5:54 pm

G'day men,
I have just acquired a piece of HBing equipment and I'm not sure what it is or how to use it. It is a stainless steel tube 1200mm long and with a diameter of 250mm. It has a handle to turn with a blade at the end. The space between the blade and the bottom of the cylinder is approx. 300mm. It looks a bit like a modern day milk churn. There is an inlet at the top, for water I imagine, and an outlet at the bottom. Does water and grain go in this thing? I HB, but have never done an all grain brew. Any help would be appreciated as my wife is keen to get rid of it unless I use it!

Hmmmm, perhaps it's a Lauter Tun? Agree that a pic would help a lot...

Nope, a lauter tun, which was used to sparge the mash when the mash concluded and brewers used to transfer the mash out of the mashtun and into the lauter tun for sparging / wort separation, just like this bad boy...

Nowadays, AG brewers typically mash and lauter in the one tun.

Which is why my initial thought was mash tun, rather than lauter tun. Most mash tuns have a mixing blade to break up dough balls and get a good homogenous temp in the mash, also they don't need to have a filter in the bottom, the full contents can be moved to the lauter tun.

All three of the micros I have brewed in have had seperate mash and lauter tuns, it is still common practice.
Prost and happy brewing!

G'Day Everyone,
I posted a question regarding some equipment I acquired. Well I've eventually been able to put some photos of what it is. I'm enquiring about what it is, what's it used for and are all the parts there? Any help would be much appreciated.

G'day everyone,
I have just acquired this piece of hardware and don't know what it is. I did post this question the other day but I didn't include the pictures. I'm not sure if all the bits are there. If someone could help me out it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

It's hard to tell, Cadbury, looking at thumbnail pics...It might be a custom made, rather large, metallic Organoleptic Hop Transducer.

...aka Randall. Simple cylinder, ball valve at the bottom and a circular poker. It's not standard brewing equipment but that's about all I can think of. You could use it for other things but that's my guess at the moment.
