2 AG's & counting.

Well you buggers have started something here.

After tasting my first AG @ bottling i was impressed, so Iv'e had to do a few more just to confirm. (plus I'm out of work at the moment & have plenty of time to brew!!)
Currently got one going with S-05, first one was with S-23, & now placed my order for 2 more batches of grain to be picked up this arvo.

Grain bill for all four has been the same as the first,
4Kg pale pils malt (BB)
0.5Kg Wheat malt (BB)
0.5Kg flaked maize

Mashing at 63 - 64C

Even knocked up a rough but efective three tier stand

Still using the single addition of Por flowers at 60 Mins, but with the one currently brewing, it had no Hop smell left at the end of the boil, so I threw 12g of cluster pellets in for the last 10Mins.

Look out, it seems you can teach an old dog new tricks! :D :D :D :D Mick.

And, on the subject of that cluster addition, I reckon you'll be brewing IPAs in another year or so.

Make that 4 AG's & counting now!

Still doing the odd Kit beer in between to keep stocks up, but am now drinking the first AG Lager I did & it's shaping up to be a very nice beer, even though I did a single 60 Minute hop addition it has carried over some nice subtle hop flavours probably due to the gentle boil that I got on that first one.....AG.....All Good!

Nice one !

No looking back now that you've crossed over into the world of AG brewing.

Where are you sourcing your supplies, at MHB ?

If so, why not ask Mark to join you up to his email list to his customers and HAG brewers?

I did another mash on Fri, night & have tuned my methods in two areas,
The first is with monitoring temps, I bought a dual probe digital thermometer which lets me monitor both the mash & the sparge water heating up in the kettle at the same time, just select which probe I want to read & watch it tick up to temp from a distance, no more "open the lid & stick you hand in every ten minutes" with a stick type digital.

Image

& waiting for the boil???

Image

The other was, I made a hook & put another tap in the lid of the jugs that I sparge from, no more wrestling with a stink'n hot container balancing on top of the mash tunn.

Image

I upped my Hop additions this time too, trying to replicate that first AG I did, it was just a single 25g @ 60 Mins with fresh PoR flowers but it carried over some nice subtle Hop flavours, but the worst part........Iv'e only got 6 bottles of it left.....
Q.
could it have been because of a slow boil, (not much more than a simmer) or maybe because that one was 8 points heavier gravity??? (less water & different source of grain)

Anyway, Iv'e upped my Hop schedule (& use a medium boil) to 30g @ 60 Min, 15g @ 15Min & 5g @ F/O. & I had to use pellets this time

Cheers, Mick.
