Your Favorite Pubs

Postby goatsby » Wednesday Aug 23, 2006 2:46 pm

What is everyones favorite pubs in their locality or when they travel

The ones that have my endorsement are

Local
The Commercial Horsham - they have a intresting display of old heritage signs and things of the Wimmera like having wool presses converted into drinking tables, one of rare examples of of reniovation done tastefully

The Royal Horsham I like the outside but the inside isnt the best

The Union Nhill unfortunately this pub is in Nhill otherwise I would make it my local . Nice high ceilings has a lot of architectual integrity.

The Avoca Avoca, this pub would also make a nice local nice high ceilings unrenovated even the thrones have a space of airness about them unlike brighthly lighted "disco dunnies in the city>

Outside My Region

Melbourne

The Lord Newry North Fitzroy I havnt been there for years plaese dont tell it has been renovated

The Rose Fitzroy a nice old fashioned inner surburban pub

Adelaide and South Australia

There was a nice pub in a side street of North Adelaide havnt been there since 1986 I hope it is still there

Tanunda Hotel used to be good but now you have to speak in a deeper voice above the din of the pokies like many country pubs in SA

Sydney

The Harbour View, I always like having a pot while admiring the coathanger out the bar window.

Those are my favorites

I have also officailly boycotted some

1) Zagames, "everyone loves zagames" well i dont!! If Robyn Boyds book
"the Australian Ugliness" is ever reprinted they should have a picture of a Zagames on the cover. A awfull crass establishment if there ever was one. http://www.zagames.com.au/

2) Any pub renovated by Peter Daicos in the late 80s, Peter Daicos has a even worse vision of visual aesthetic then zagames!!

Anyone else have good pubs to reccomend??? Looking forward to hear

The Corkman Irish Pub is where I hang out with my mates, and it's tops! My local is the Castle Hotel, great for dinner on Monday and Tuesday... $11 anything on the menu.

Goatsby, I have been to the Rose in Fitzroy a few times a few years back, even have a stubby cooler from there
you may be thinking of the Dan OConnell or the Wellington in North Adelaide off the main drag, or the Queens Head

most pubs in North Adelaide are good, Royal Oak, Oxford, Archer
Corripe Cervisiam

JS in Melbourne is pretty good.

The Wig and Pen is my new favourite since having moved to Canberra.

Mmmm The Rose has stubby holders now.

The pub I was thinking of in North Adelaide was off the main drag, I was taking a stroll along a leafy street and discovered a little pub right in the middle of street, stopped me in my tracks immediantley. It may be the Queens Head it was a single story pub and a very very welcome find on a hot day.

I must do some research.

Yes North Adelaide is certainly on my list.

I u7sed to live in Williamstown In melbourne
my local was the Morning Stag

I did like the Crown, Steam Packet Friday nights and the Yaucht Club for the $3.50 meals. also the Stags Head. Havnt been back that way for yonks

FWIW, many years ago, the Corkman used to be called the Carlton hotel, and in fact, this is where the suburb got its name, not the other way round.

I third the Corkman :D

I used to go to Bridie O'Reilleys, but I find it to be overpriced. The Corkman, while not really selling any specialty beer, is nice, not overly expensive and recognises us when we go in - what more can you ask for?

Lucky Coq (in Prahran) and Bimbos (in Fitzroy) are cozy venues that sell delicious cheap gourmet pizzas and a variety of good beer (Little Creatures, Mountain Goat). It's good on their behalf - the food there is so cheap on certain days/times that you don't mind having a drink or two. And because they probably get most of their profits from drinks, everyone wins! I'm especially fond of their Bimbos/Blonde Coq beer - wheat beer served with a slice of lemon. Delicious and refreshing!

Hey Goatsby, i'm from Horsham too. It's a small world after all

Our pubs are pretty crap as far as beer goes, but the Commercial has been well done as far as looks go.

As for as beer choices go in Horsham pubs (on tap) if you don't like Draught or VB you'll end up a very thirsty man.
"Doc, what can I do about these terrible hangovers?"
'You can stop drinking beer'
"No, seriously Doc, what can I do?"
