Russian alternative to pubs

Been to a good pub, or bad, lately? Found a bar with a great selection of beer? Looking for a new local or somewhere to visit on holidays?

Russian alternative to pubs

Postby zest » Thursday Jul 05, 2007 6:34 pm

Hi, guys, i'm from Russia, i want to say how we drink beer in our country and ask why don't you drink in such a way. So, in Russia we prefer draft beer. we go to supermarkets, bars or cafes and buy beer in PET bottles. They are much easier to handle than glass bottles (you can drop glass bottle or hit it or whatever) and majority of us despises canned beer. We don't have pubs because we like to take beer with us wherever we go or drive. What do u think about that? Why don't you do the same?

Actually I thought that you either go to pubs or buy cases of beer in glass bottles or cans in supermarkets. As I'm against any beer except for straightly from a keg, I wondered why the majority of people in other countries all over the world do not drink draft beer. I also heard that some people brew beer at home but could not believe it's true.

What's the difference between and a glass bottle and a PET bottle? Isn't the beer the same no matter what kind of bottle it comes from? I'll agree that draught beer is better, but not many people drag a kegging system with them wherever they go. I've got one at home though.

And if you can't believe that people make beer at home, read some more of this forum. Making beer at home is what it's all about!

Actually there is a great difference, I would say, about draught beer and bottled beer. Bottled beer is pasteurized and has lots of preservatives. Everybody knows that. If you agree that draft beer is better, there is no need to drag a keg with you, you go to the shop (or pub, doesn't really matter) and buy as much beer as you need in these PET bottles. That's it. That's why I don't see the point in home brewing, you go and buy what you want without any troubles.

Ok, I'll bite

Home brewing is cheaper and can taste better than other beer, keg or bottle.

Homebrew is not pastuerised and has no artifical ingredients.

In fact most home brew is more natural than most draught beer that you can get on tap. Draught is filtered to achieve the all important water-like colour you see in most beers these days (which people only started caring about when they started using glasses for beer instead of goblets/steins etc.).

Also, draught beer is nothing compared to a bottle conditioned ale(meaning the yeast is left to naturally carbonate the beer and develop the lfavours of the beer with age).

IMHO of course

If you see no point with homebrewing then why would you be here on this site
