Tempura beer batter

Postby Chris » Monday May 03, 2010 9:21 am

Has anyone tried making a 'tempura' beer batter- essentially substituting beer for the soda water?

My current recipe is:

1 egg white whisked to soft peaks
2 cups soda water- cold
1 1/4 cups plain flour
1 1/4 cups cornflour
Seasoning to taste

Just wondering if anyone has substituted beer for water, what beer, and how it affected the batter.

G'day Chris.
My wife makes beer batter for us. She just uses the packet stuff and simply subs the liquid for beer. Used if for basic batter and tempura. Bloody Bewdiful! One way to find out, give it a go.
Cheers.

Fair enough point. I have just had 3 fried fish and squid dinners this week though, so it'll be a while
before I give it a try. I just hope it doesn't come out too heavy.

I always use beer in my batter for fish. Like Rotten's wife though, I use the packet batter and sub the beer for the water - fantastic! Should work just fine. :P Anna

What is packet batter? I'm guessing it is like a packet-mix cake or something?

Really? It's pretty easy to make batter- and probably cheaper too.

Hmmm... that gives me an idea. Maybe I could make some beer... :D

I just hate cooking so much I'll take any shortcut I can regardless of cost! All you do is chuck the dry stuff in a bowl and mix the beer in!

.... of course, beer's a totally different story!

Hey Chris you're right it's not hard to make batter, but when you got a hungry tribe to feed, sometimes quick and easy, needs to be just that.
Cheers.

You may mention that, but then what would i do with all my hard earned money, or all those days spent at kids sporting events . I'd have to find more hobbies or drink more beer. Is that possible?
Cheers

Spend more time at the pub with mates drinking beer 8)

What's marriage got to do with kids?

No, they are breeding which gets in the way of drinking.
