What equipment is needed to keg?

The ins and outs of putting your beer into kegs.

What equipment is needed to keg?

Postby ex0ja » Sunday Mar 12, 2006 5:59 pm

Hey

I know there is no way I can afford to set up a kegging system right now, but I'd just like to know what I am going to have to purchase when I do and how much money I will need saved up.

When I look at pages like: http://www.grainandgrape.com.au/brewingsystems_info.htm I see all sorts of connections, taps, valves etc. and I don't have any idea what any of it is for. What parts would I need if I wanted to start kegging?

The only thing I know I need so far is a keg and a tap to despence the beer. So obviously I know nothing

Can anyone give me an idea of what parts I need and what sort of cost I'll be having to pay?

Thanks.

Keg/s, pluto or tap, Co2 gauge (to go on gas bottle), beer disconnect, gas disconect & beer/gas lines.

Get your kegs from the US (around $160 AU for 4 delivered) The rest can be sourced from most HBS.

And you need a keg fridge or miracle box.

There is no such thing as bad beer. There is only good beer and better beer.

If you got to your HBS, they usually have a deal for everything you need, except your fridge.

Got mine for around $400. (one keg, gas, all the lines, pluto gun, disconnets etc.)

If you are in Melbourne I recommend Grain and Grape.

All I need is a cold beer, a kind word, and unquestioned world domination.

Ok first the very basics to get beer out of a keg system;

Fridge that fits kegs
Kegs (2 minimum)
CO2 Regulator (1 or 2 dial does not matter)
Pluto gun
Beer disconnect
Gas disconnect
Beer line
Gas line
Line clamps (1 for each disconnect)
Gas bottle of CO2

This is the minimum you need for a keg system I have not included prices as these will very depending on how much shopping around do not limit your search to HBS you can save money by looking for bar suppliers for some of these items.

To expand on the basic kit you can add;
Fridge door taps
Drip tray
T piece for gas line (to run more than one keg)
Fonts
Aerators (for stouts with nitrogen)
Nitrogen Regulator
Snap lock adaptors
Snap lock taps
Panel adaptor

These are extras that will expanded a basic system and make it look better.

Have a look at this website for more of an idea http://www.countrybrewer.com.au/category71_1.htm or have a look at my web link at the bottom of this post (WWW button) there are some instructional photos on kegging there.
