Keg Taps.. Foaming sort?

Postby Stangas » Friday Mar 03, 2006 3:38 pm

Hey guys... i have a kilkenny ready to be kegged..

anyone heard of the tap required for the purpose, you know the sort that foams the beer, and then you let is settle? I have seen one, want to go to the HBS informed..

what am i asking for?? i need to know wether it is a fitment onto an existing tap or is it a separate tap altogether?

Cheers

Stangas,
The only system that I know of for pouring the cask type beers (Guinness / Kilkenny types etc..) involve the use of Nitrogen instead of CO2. I believe that the beer is carbonated the same way with CO2 but dispensed with nitrogen. Sorry can't be much more help, but if you find some special tap or nossle I'd be interested to know more about it.

Please keep us informed
Cheers

I'm not sure what the tap is called, but I can tell you that the creamy head on a kilkenny that you get at the pub is not from the tap alone. They charge the kegs with a mixture of nitrogen and co2, this combined with the fancy nozzle on the tap gives the creamy head.

Cheers

Well the bit i am looking for is a screw fitting that goes onto any screw tap or gun.

My tap in not the screw sort, so i am purchasing the gun style as well.

Its called a guiness aerator

To do this you need a tap or gun with an aerator screwed on to the end of it. You then need to gas and pour the keg using a CO2/Nitrogen mix. This will give you that Guinness/Kilkenny pour. Don't try and use the aerator for CO2 gassed beer and don't use co2/nitrrogen without the aerator.

The CO2/Nitrogen mix can only be used with the correct style of beer or you will end up with a glass full of foam.

I can not remember the percentage of the CO2/Nitrogen mix. You will need a second bottle with this mix in it. You also need a nitrogen regulator not a CO2 regulator.

It is a lot of extra gear and a bit of mucking around to get set up. I have been looking into it as well so far I only have the gun and aerator.

I think BOC sell the co2 nitrogen mix as cellarmix or something like that.

bugger... i was so hoping i could just drop the pressure in the keg and do a slow pour with the foaming head.

Can you charge the kegs with this nit/co2 mix? Can you pour normal beers with the mix?

Thinking i might just change them over and be done with it

Yes you use the nit/co2 mix to carbonate and pour.

I have not tried pouring normal beers with the mix and have been told it will not work with lowerer gravity beers.

YES there is cellar mix and another one, one is 30% and the other is 40% nitrogen.

I have tried using the aerator with normal beer and it turns out a glass of creamy head.
