freezer size?

The ins and outs of putting your beer into kegs.

freezer size?

Postby Cadbury » Tuesday Sep 01, 2009 8:05 pm

G'day men,
I am in the process of buying a chest freezer off ebay to put my kegs in. What size freezer do I need to fit 3 or 4 kegs. I thought I'd look like an idiot carting a keg around Harvey Norman and dropping it in his new freezers to get an idea!

Here is a link to help you out, just convert the cubic feet to litres to get the capacity.

I did what they did and used cardboard cut outs when I bought my latest freezer the other month. Buying off ebay makes it harder but if you put a collar on thats high enough you can fit kegs on the compressor hump as well. Both my 210L ones held/hold 6 kegs with a collar. A 150L would most probably fit 3 or 4 kegs in a tight fit depending on what you do with your gas.

hope this helps

Its a wooden collar you build and place on top of the freezer and attach the lid too. It gives you extra height and somewhere to fit your taps. Otherwise you can just just picnic taps and not have to mod anything.

Have a look at this thread off the same forum as its full of pics and tips for converting fridges and freezers to hold kegs.

I've been looking around for months for a decent Chest freezer which is at least 200L and resonably priced.. Few and far between

Well today it all fell into place.. :D Picked up a 380L chest freezer for $80... Couldn't believe it

Only problem is it has the sliding glass lids but I'll work around that.

The journey has begun

Well it was a quick journey.. :D

Next day bought a fridgemate, keg & a picnic tap (already had the gas bottle & reg)

Belgian Wheat in and carbed. Finaly got it to the right C02 level this morning (had to have a couple to test though @ 7am)

Just need to sort out a top for the freezer so I can mount the font.. and get more kegs.

I've fallen in love again..

Of course, there's another use for a collar.
Mount the taps on the collar, and you don't have to drill through the freezer itself.

Not to mention you can usually fit another keg or two on the compressor hump

I'm about to put a collar on my new freezer next month :D
