Ice exposed to the air in your freezer will be contaminated.

But, isnt the point of this.... what if its not exposed to air in the freezer ?

I would stay away from using ice. You can't guarantee the medium is free from CFU's. Use cold water filtered through a Brita or another in line filter that can take them out.

what if the ice is made from preboiled water and frozen in sanitized and air sealed containers ?

With all due respect DD, u reading the question ? How u going to get CFU's in the ice if its airsealed ?

Quite frankly Mr. Guest, Dogger would be more than justified in getting cross at your anonymous and pointless needling, as would any other well- meaning user of the forum.

Now wait a minute guys.

I need this explained.

Do you mean by teh remark that "do you wash cantaloupe" , to which the obvious answer is no, to imply that the outside of the container that you freeze the water in can be contaminated with refrigerant gases or bugs ?

Cantaloupe lies on the ground in a field. They spread shit on the field and cantaloupe in order to make it grow bigger. Shit can contain E-Coli if from bovine. You cut the cantaloupe and you drag the bacteria into the fruit. High water content, some sugar, high pH, bacteria grows nicely. You eat it, get sick, could die.

You should wash cantaloupe.

So you mean that the process of opening the container that houses the sterile ice is fraught with danger ?

So the solution is to aseptically get sterile ice into the wort....
