Lager starter smells weird

Postby squirt in the turns » Tuesday Mar 15, 2011 1:31 pm

After a bit of a hiatus, I'm trying to culture my first lager starter. It's a smack a pack of 2278 (Czech Pils), pitched into a 1 L starter in a 2L flask at about 14 C (I though it was at 10 C at the time). It's been on a stir plate at 10 C for a day and a half now, and it smells funny. Not rotten egg, which I was expecting, but something almost synthetic/plastic like, and not that strong. There also does not seem to be much pressure building up in the flask, if the cling wrap is anything to go by.

At first I though the smell was the wiring for the stir plate getting hot, due to my rather special soldering skills  , but that does not seem to be the case. The smack pack smelled normal and yeasty when I opened it, and there's nothing else in the fridge at all.

Is this a sign of infection?
