I found a new homebrew store today, the guys are great.
The bloke stepped me through the procedure for my first partial tonight, they showed me their set up, even gave me a free hydrometer.

That's the plan, but in the meantime, I don't really see any problem with using a kilo or two of extract. How adversely can that affect a beer?

Doesn't really have an adverse affect, just gives you a different end product. Malt extract is generally mashed at the higher end of the scale so will end up giving you a sweeter beer if that's all you're using. Before I went AG and was brewing extract, I'd regularly add about 300g of dextrose just to dry it out a bit and counteract the sweetness.

Yep. I agree with Bullfrog, particularly on the dextrose.
