Favorite hop combos?

Postby Tipsy » Saturday Jul 21, 2012 11:07 pm

I've had Cascade and Amarillo, and didn't care for it much.
But I've mixed Cascade with Northdown and it was great and the last APA I mixed it with Willamette and thought it was pretty good.

What's your favorite combos?

I'm not an Amarillo fan, but I do love US hops.

My favourite combos are Cascade, Chinook, and Columbus.

And I hope my latest brew with lots of late EKG and Styrian will hit the spot.

I get woken by pain in my shoulder, so I get up for a while. After effects of surgery. About to head back to bed.

I use Columbus (also known as Tomahawk or Zeus) for bittering in APA and AIPA, as it has a very high AA%.

I don't have a heap of experience to draw from, but I agree with Warra about Cascade and Chinook. Although, I do love Amarillo on it's own too.

Just looked at my BS2 and realise now that my favourite AIPA used Columbus at flame out and also dry hop at 6 days!

Can't have been all bad, as I sent one off for the last Christmas draw to Earle. By all accounts it was well received.

Challenger and EKG, fuggles and EKG, and cascade and willammette all go well together. Heaps more I haven't got around to trying yet.

Amarillo and Chinook are big APA favourites down our way with Citrus starting to make a name for itself. Can't go past Fuggles and Styrian for English styles

Big Dave’s BIAB Lean & Hungry APA I won in the lotto was glorious.
Pretty certain it was Chinook and Galaxy?

I've used galaxy with my kit and partials as an aroma hop since. Very fruity.
But now that I've moved to BIAB, I will try and ask Big Dave to share his recipe.

Dave? Can you whack it up in the recipe threads or maybe on a PM?

Cascade and Nelson Sauvon, Smells fantastic and tastes great

- good balance between Bitter/flavour/aroma.
Use 50/50 ratio for each addition.

Jeez Sonny, glad you liked it. I am blushing a bit.

Pretty sure it was Cascade and Chinook.... probably.... Will dig up the recipe and pop it down somewhere.

Would that be POR only for bittering or have you tried any late?

Drinking a home brew amber that I used 2oz Simcoe for an hour and 2oz Simcoe for ten minutes. It's growing on me. I steeped a pound of Belgian biscuit malt at the start which gave it a kind of coffee and scones finish. Rather interesting combo.
