Timer to heat mash liquor

Postby Pogierob » Friday Jul 19, 2013 6:32 pm

Ok so after doing a little reading over this forum, I have decided to get a timer relay for my BIAB urn as well, so I can stream line the brew day. ( have young kids) so time is sucked out of personal endeavors pretty easily.

If I can have the water to temp when I wake up then I have a chance of making a brew on a regular basis.

I'm going to give GG a call in the morning and get some grain I think.

I just have to get the ball rolling.

Why don't you just set your HLT-BIAB unit on a timer? If it's hooked up to a temp controller or PID (I don't have) even better as it would stop at desired tamp. or just get up in time

I set my urn up the night before, add water, set the dial to a degree or so below mash in temp and set a timer to start about an hour before I want to mash in. When I get up in the morning I just need to bring up the temp the last degree or so and mask in. Would work even better if I added an STC-1000 to the set up.

I also have a timer on the HLT. Generally brew after work these days so arriving home to hot water allows me to mash in and walk away.

Great idea. Not an option for me though. A cost I can't afford at the moment.

That is a good buy Rob.

The problem with a lot of the cheap and not so cheap commercially available timers is they only come equipped with a ten amp switching capacity, which will not last all that long running a 20 amp HLT/urn/boiling thing. That ebay timer, linked by Rob, should last indefinitely and is about half the price of my average grain bill.
