Malt Shovel At Big W

for all you malt shovel lovers i just picked up some cans of their two row lager and noticed the whole range was on special for $12.98 compared to like $17-18 at the local brew shops.

Thats for a can that only makes 10 to 11 litres right?????

yeah but depends on what you brew it with, i use it for my becks recipe and make up to 21 litres and it tastes great.

I use them when they are on special for prototype brews - when I want to get screwy and try new and different wort additions, without the effort and waste of a full 22L if things go pear shaped.

of course my friend here it is

malt shovel two row lager
light liquid malt extract 1.5 kg
hallertau hops 25g
saaz hops 15g
and saflager yeast x2
final volume 21 litres

the process i use is to boil the hallertau hops (rolling boil) for 20 minutes
bring saaz to boil and simmer for 2 mins then turn off and rest for 10 mins
meanwhile boiling all other ingredients (cept yeast obviously) for 15 mins,
strain hops in when done and add 10 litres of cold water to fermenter, add hot gear and top up to 21 litres, pitch both yeasts and sit back and crack a cold one

bigW in melbourne (QV) sell them ~$13 regularly. I saw the price at other bigW store selling them around $15.

sorry i should have stated that these were melbourne prices but even at $15 that is still $2-3 cheaper than most brew stores!

Yeah, it's pretty common to find high-volume discount type stores have cheaper kits than homebrew shops. The cheapest place to get kits I've found is my girlfriend's local Coles supermarket (Greensborough plaza) which has most of the Coopers range for $9. I got a whole bunch when they were on special for $8.

Only trouble is I've got into more complex brews, and these generally require the specialty kits which these stores don't tend to stock...

Most welcome wassa ive done it several times now and it is delish after a couple of months but still ok after only three weeks so good luck.

Deffinately, ive used liquids for it and they turned out fine

I just cleaned out the Big W at Tweed Heads, they had their MS Pale Ale cans on special for $5.98, with my old woolies discount card that brought it down to $5.68...

Unfortunately they only had one can left on the shelf.

They also have their Malt Shovel fermenter kits on special for $30 flat, that's cheaper than I can buy a single fermenter for at my local HB store, I was tempted to buy it!

Hey lethal where did you get your recipe for Becks with the MS Two Row can, I've got 3 of these cans and wanna make something differnent with one, or what was the recipe

i saw that recipe in the brewing crafts book (blue one) you can get from most HB shops...

Apart from that, there are not many recipes using the MSB kit cans.

I got 11 cans some 2 rows some pale ales for 5.98, and a mate a Fermenter for 30bucks, great birthday pressy, was gonna buy one anyway for $53. And on top of that had a old discount card from woolies that still works, gotta love their system. or lack of
