Just on packaged & bulk (commercial) I believe. A pot up to $3.60 @ the bar. Everyone knows that beer is evil, so its just the government looking
after our interests. They always know best

But the drought will see an increase in malt grain costs which will be passed onto the homebrewer, nothing as bad as the tax on comercial beer though

They wouldn't go for home brewers. I'll tell you something interesting (at least to me). There are three reasons for an excise.

1. It makes the Government a buck (and there's not enough of a buck to make from us).
2. There are certains goods that are inherently cheap, which could lead to too much consumption, which in turn, is a bad thing (tobacco, alcohol, fuel - it's non-renewable). Excise controls the demand for these products. You can't stick excise on HB as it's not considered to be an alcohol.
3. It's used as a tool to create alternative sectors. Throw an excise on petroleum you get people looking for alternate energy supplies. Stick it on wine, you get wineries to open their cellar doors to the public, which leads to restaurants, tourism etc (there's no excise on wine sold at the cellar door). Now, HB stores and the HB industry itself is a classic 'alternate' sector.

Interesting stuff. May make you think a bit differently.

Haha well, a club I'm in (we play music) adjourns to the pub after rehearsals... maybe they'll start adjourning to my place after they discover my kegging system... they can reimburse me for malt, yeast and hops, right?

The price at the doors (in the hunter anyway) is still significantly more than at dan murphy's. I suppose it's the whole tourist thing driving the prices.

I don't mind paying a little more at the cellar door if I think I am getting something in excess of what I get at a chain liquor outlet.

Some of the smarter winery operators understand this point of view and make visiting their winery more than just hanging around in a dank part of their cellar and sipping wine that's too warm out of cheap plastic sampling containers, complaining about the ferking tourists that just come for a cheap drink and never buy anything, ruining the access roads in their four-wheel-drives... oops.

The Brown Brothers cafe experience at Rutherglen or the Gapsted cafe on the Snow Road are very pleasant things to do with one's spouse or wine-loving friends.

$3.60 a pot? That is ridiculous. No wonder I homebrew. I can do 30 bottles of decent beer for less than 6 pots.
