The price at the doors (in the hunter anyway) is still significantly more than at dan murphy's. I suppose it's the whole tourist thing driving the prices.

Yep. There is three tier pricing in the Hunter.

Tourist prices
'Discount' tourist prices (just to make you feel you're getting a good deal).
'Locals' pricing.

Uncle lives there and I'll only buy wine when I'm with him. The discount is in the vicinity of 30-40% - pretty hefty and not good on the tourist wallet.

$3.60 a pot? That is ridiculous. No wonder I homebrew. I can do 30 bottles of decent beer for less than 6 pots.

Ranges from $4.30 to $5 here for a schooner.

OF course Schooner is a completely different thing from state to state. Here a schooner is about $2.50, but it is 285ml :D

425ml is a pint in Adelaide, a proper pint is called an Imperial Pint here...I demand a nationalised standard for names of beer glasses!

We should start a petition, this could be an election issue.

BEGIN RANT
And don't forget that stupid thing invented by young Sydney 'daddy's boys' who were given three or four pubs for their birthday:

Schmiddys - 355ml.

Schmiddy's hold no place in any official measurment system and are a deliberate rip off.

These insidious 'warts' on the ass end of pub culture suddenly started appearing in just about every renovated bar in Sydney. They don't stack well, they're heavier and are 70ml short.

I certainly didn't see any pub stick up advertisements saying "Attention all punters, from this day forward we'll be decreasing your beer serving sized by 15% and increasing the cost of this beer by 15% because our bar is cooler than the other bars".

END RANT

Danzar I agree. Even 425ml is a dubious size. As far as I'm concerned we should standardise our beer glasses to Pint (570ml) and 1/2 Pint (285ml) in each and every state. As mentioned previously jug is jug in anyone's language.

This standardisation would reduce confusion in the market and lead to a better understanding of alcohol content and enable consumer regulation of alcohol intake.

As greg said, this is starting to look like the sound basis for a petition

They still only fit 375 ml of beer, if you want a head that is. If you buy a stubbie and pour it in, you soon realise you only get 375ml.

My mate told me this one and apparently a true story.

His mate goes into bar, orders a schooner. Barman pours beer.

Man asks "Can you squeeze a little bit of lemonade in that for me?"

Barman, "No Worries"

Man "Well you can fill the rest up with F%$#ing beer then"

Cheers

After 2 years in the UK i now think our jugs here are piss poor. 1100 odd mLs. In the UK, a jug is 4 imperail pints! Yep, 2 and a bit litres! The student bar i was hanging around was charging us 6 pounds a jug, or about $15. Pity is was full of carlsberg/carling......

I dont think the poms know much :D but hells bells - 2 sizes for beer. a pint and a half pint for the ladies. Simple but effective.

A petition sounds great.

Joe Hildebrand, a Daily Telegraph columnist, hates them and regularly pans the Schmiddy in his columns. He event wrote a dedicated article some time ago (I'm getting it sent to me - an interesting read).

I'm sure Joe would support it!

Hi All

As the name says, I'm a Pommie. I deliberately frequent pubs that serve pints, schooners I can just, and I mean just, cope with. Went into a Pub in Leichhardt and asked for a schooner, they only had shmiddys but fortunately for me they sold it to me at the same price as a schooner so at least I felt 50% happy with the transaction

The beer culture in England is certainly different and its nice to have a proper glass in your hand, last orders fighting at the bar to get your 3 pints with only 20 minutes to drink them - marvellous
Pubs serve beer in schooners because the heat warms the beer. Cant we have the beer in pints and drink faster?

First time i went to NSW i walked up to the bar and asked for a pot, The barmaid looked at me and asked if i would like a middy or a schooner to which i replied "what the hell are they" i dont even think a middy is big enough to be used as a coke glass
