Stiegl Goldbrau

The good, the bad and the ugly of commercial beer and breweries, including microbreweries and craft breweries.

Stiegl Goldbrau

I was fortunate enough to jag a trip to the Austrian Schnitzelhuas at Erina the other day, and whilst it's no Hoffbrauhaus or Lowenbrau Keller the food is good and it is a lot closer.

As I had never tried it I chose a Stiegl Goldbrau from the beer menu, thinking that if it's on tap at a German/Austrian restaurant it has to be good right? Wrong! The first whiff I got was of DMS, which to the uninitiated is the cooked vegetable smell you get from boiling cauliflower or cabbage and is commonly removed from pils malt beers by a long vigourous boil. The taste was more of the same with no noticeable hop flavour or aroma to hide it whatsoever. In short a waste of $9.00 for a half litre, especially when I could have had a Weltenberger pils or Lowenbrau weizen instead.

The fact I was designated driver and couldn't have another beer only served to compound my horror! :(

In short, steer clear of Stiegl.
