ERDINGER: champ?

The good, the bad and the ugly of commercial beer and breweries, including microbreweries and craft breweries.

ERDINGER: champ?

Postby James L » Tuesday Dec 18, 2007 9:28 am

Went to my local liquorland (of all places) and noticed that they have started to stock Erdinger. Not the Erdinger that we all know and love, but a brew they call Champ....

Its a wheat beer still brewed under reinheitsgebot (purity law), but it seems that they are trying to break into the megaswill market (cheap 330ml twist top sixpacks instead of the 500ml bottles). Its cloudy and still has the sediment on the bottom of the bottle, which is excellent, and the beer itself is pretty darn good. I'd drink that any day over MB Redback. Its going at 15 bucks a six pack which doesnt hurt the hip pocket too...

They also have a very ingenious way of opening the bottles (but you need two of them)...

If you find it, give it a go, you might be as pleasantly surprised as i was....

Cheers

James

The 0.33-liter longneck bottle with its unique opening mechanism emphasizes the lifestyle character of the new beer. In addition to its twist-open cap, the innovative bottle also features an integrated opener on the bottom for extra convenience. Simply place one Erdinger Champ on top of another to twist open the bottom bottle. As you can see, it's always best to order two bottles and enjoy Erdinger Champ in company!

the cool thing is, when you open your beer with the bottom of the one you've just finished, the opener fits so well to the cap, that the cap stays in the opener for easy disposal.

and all it takes is a little tap/knock to get the cap out... magic.

Those crasy germans, what will they think of next....

I tried this about a year ago at Section 8 bar in Melbourne (tattersales lane) - it was a nice beer... not your typical German beer as you say. I seem to remember the bottles being quite large for a 375ml...They serve longnecks at Section 8 also... god bless em.

they would probably seem larger due to the lost space in the bottom

Bought the last 6 Pack at the 1st Choice Liquor at Glendale today.

Beers pretty good....the bottle is a bit of a Novelty too.

Definitely better than MB Redback...Not as sour....well the Redback I had was. :?

Just had another quick sip.....very noice indeed.

Cheers

Saw this in Dan's a few weeks ago when I was in Sydney last time. Didn't buy it though. Bought the Pikantus instead. I do love all the Erdinger products, in fact it's on tap at the Beach House Café in Port Macquarie (I regularly enjoy them), but the Pikantus is brilliant.
Have a look for the thread on Trough Lolly's Pikantus Dunkler Weizenbock clone. It's a magic brew. I've just enjoyed two of them. If I have any more, I'll get even more effusive, and the spelling will start to go off..........
