I've drank beer in pubs in every state in Australia bar Tasmania, never been 'embarrassed' by ordering the wrong size yet! Just act dumb and the bar staff will offer a couple of alternatives, pick the big one if you know the beer, smaller if you don't, then take it from there!
Works for me!

At home, I've got my own terms for my beer glasses:
Small - 200ml
Big - 425ml
Inbetween size - 285ml
The Big one is my favourite as two pours from a 750ml bottle empties it & the second pour only has a little sedement in it.
The Inbetween size only gets used when the big one is dirty & I'm too lazy to clean it.
The small size never gets used coz they go empty to quick. Which makes me wonder why I have them???

> I think that the smaller glasses somehow convinces them they're not an alcoholic.

Actually, there is a simple question to determine if you are an alcoholic or not: do you go to meetings? If not, you are merely a drunk :-)
