So...I've struggled my whole life with weight. Whenever I lose it, surely enough I find it again...with friends.
So now I've made the decision to get gastric banding done. I'm going to be a dad for the first time, and I want to be around for him/her for a long time.

But....I'm told by my specialist that i will no longer be able to drink carbonated drinks. Which would no doubt includes beer. If I have to, I will give it up. My health is now the priority.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has gone down this road? If so, do you still drink the good stuff?

This may mean the sale of all my brewing gear. Kegerator and three cornies included. So stay tuned.

On the bathroom job I'm doing now the husband had 2/3rd's of his stomach removed and has gastric banding and yesterday he drank some lemonade(which is carbonated) with no problems. I'll ask the guy today and get back to you on it if you like.

Is there carbonated and carbonated? Or just plain carbonated? Could you perhaps get away with lightly carbonated or semi-flat English ales?

Just what I was thinking.

Good on you for taking the step to having surgery. I'm not the skinniest guy going around and was told at my 40-year checkup the other day that I just made it in to an acceptable BMI, but I can't imagine what it must be like to battle weight as some people do.

Congratulation on impending fatherhood, and good luck with the surgery.

Well mate I've had a good chat over the last couple of days with a few people who have had gastric banding. Basically if you still want to drink beer go ahead mate but as you will find it will be in moderation as you will have to wait for it to go down. So get on and brew some top shelf stuff that you can sip on over and over and enjoy. The most important part IS wait until your fully used to eating less etc.

Yer the key is drinking slowly and waiting 15mins or so till after eating to avoid throwing up, Father In Law had one (he passed away last year, multiple health issues) and a good mates partner has one and she is still a coke fiend on some days.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I had to head to sunny Melbourne for work. Funnily enough, the day after I leave...it starts pissing down. Awesome city.

Well, I really don't want to stop drinking beer, and I REALLY don't want to stop making it. I'm more than prepared to cut my intake though. It's a small price to pay for health and living a long time for my baby.

So...i've had my surgery and all is going well.

I've been doing a lot of study and it seems a lot of people still drink fizzy soft drinks after they have gastric banding. I personally am avoiding it like the plague.

I was just wondering, what are the CO2 levels in soft drinks like compared to an average beer? It seems to me that fizzy drinks have much higher volumes than beer. Is this the case?

I've read on many occassions that commercial soft drinks are carbonated anywhere between 3.5 to 4 vols of c02.

I personally carb my pale ales at around 2.8 vols. There's a site I use to work out my bulk priming rate. Take a look at the drop down box, it'll give you an idea of the 'common' levels of carbonation for various styles of beer. I wonder if you could get away with drinking something carbed in the low 2's, like many english beers, and some IPA's?
