Anyone going to any GBW events?

Postby Oliver » Tuesday May 14, 2013 2:29 pm

Hi folks,

Is anyone else doing anything for Good Beer Week in Melbourne?

Here's what I'm doing, if you're remotely interested :-)

SATURDAY 18
System wars - Grain and Grape

MONDAY 20
Prickly Moses Rare & Wild - Royal Standard Hotel, West Melbourne.

TUESDAY 21
“666” An intimate dinner with the makers - The Courthouse Hotel, North Melbourne

WEDNESDAY 22
Brewers & Chewers - The Local Taphouse, St Kilda

Plus I'll also drop past the Pint of Origin Qld at Deja Vu in Little Lonsdale Street and Pint of Origin ACT at the Courthouse Hotel.

If anyone's interested in joining me at Pint of Origin then PM me.

Cheers,

Oliver

Been thinking of going to the Beer SpecTapular at the Exhibition Buildings on Friday the 24th. A mate lives over the road so accommodation is secured. A couple of other mates are interested as well.

Unfortunately going to some of the mid-week events is difficult as I live up in Mildura and working for a living sometimes gets in the way.

Went to the Great Australian Beer SpecTapular (GABS) on Friday with a couple of mates. Was a good time and some great beers were tasted. It's not often you get to taste some many different varieties of beer in one place, so it was worth the effort. I do think it was a little expensive though, $10 for a paddle of 5 shot size glasses of beer (5 mouthfulls). You can go through the money pretty quick. We had a couple of paddles like this then moved onto just filling a pot size glass we got when we arrived. Food was pretty pricy as well, $12 for a hot dog.

Anyway it was still fun, here's a couple of photos.

Had some live music to set the mood.

That is a spectacular venue. I hope the beer did it justice.
2000 light beers from home.

I had planned to go to the Spectapular on Sunday, but ended up going on Friday night with a group of about 12. Had a good night. I wasn't overwhelmed by any of the beers. Probably my favourite was a smoked porter, which also got the thumbs-up from most of the others there.

This is some of what I had on Friday (can't remember the others)

#2 3 Ravens Brewery - Black 55 (American Black Pale Ale)
#26 Doctors Orders Brewing - Intravenous Elixir (Barrel Aged Belgian Black IPA)
#45 Kooinda Brewery - Mosaic American Pale Ale (APA)
#52 Mash Brewing - The Grasscutter (Lawnmower Ale whatever that is)
#54 McCashins Brewery - Great Oak (Red/Brown Ale)
#58 Mornington Peninsula Brewery - Commonfolk Brown (Imperial Brown)

Can't say any of these were bad beers, I enjoyed everything I tasted, although some more than others.
I do remember having a dark beer that was just like an espresso. Think that was the Intravenous Elixir Black IPA (#26). That was pretty good.

Here is a list of all the beers that were available http://gabsfestival.com.au/all-beers/
