Anyone else going to Beervana?

Postby Oliver » Wednesday Jul 31, 2013 2:03 pm

Is anyone else apart from Barls and me going to Beervana in Wellington next week?

I am, and am lucky enough to be able to make a beer trip of it. The little lady can no longer come for the first five nights due to work commitments so I have been able to ditch the winery aspect of the trip. Instead, a mate from NZ and I are heading to Nelson for three nights to check out the beer scene down there (11 breweries in a town of 40,000, although some are closed for winter), then back to Beervana in Wellington. I have tickets for the Friday and Saturday night tasting sessions and the Saturday morning homebrewing session.

I'm a Beervana virgin so I'm not really sure what to expect, but by all accounts it's a good event.

Cheers,

Oliver

EDIT: Added link to Beervana website.

Any event that involves drinking beer is a good event in my opinion.

I've heard a rumour Spiegelau might have their new IPA glasses (the ones developed with Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head) for sale at Beervana. Keep an eye out for them. They're $25 for 2 on the Riedel USA website, but shipping makes it too exxy. Sierra Nevada sell branded ones for $9 each in their store, but again shipping to Aus is the killer. Who knows when they might start selling them here, the Riedel aussie website is currently down as their ISP is moving servers or some such!

Oh and as a thanks for the hot tip if there's room in the suitcase for another pair can you bring me home some! :-)

Right will do once I'm back in the country.
Might be an idea to do a bulk order so maybe get a few of you together as it makes it cheaper

Just tasted my 45th different beer since arriving in NZ last Saturday. And I haven't even been to Beervana yet!

That's unique beers. One of my rules - only broken once in the absence of anything else reasonable to drink - was to not drink the same beer twice.

The final count is a further 46 over three sessions at Beervana (that number includes tastes of other people's beers) and three more beers not at Beervana. I'm at the airport now, so there's probably time for a sneaky one or two more. (Dave from Mountain Goat is at the next table, presumably on my flight back to Melbourne.)

So current total is 94 different beers over eight nights. Only two, from memory, were Australian and I had one of my homebrews that I brought over for a friend to taste. So 91 different NZ beers. Not bad going ...

I never thought I'd say this, but I am just about beered out!

A full report will follow.
