Grolsch Bottles: How Good Are They/ Is It Worth The Cost?

Postby ignisdraconis » Tuesday Jan 23, 2007 8:53 pm

They look rad, they are expensive, is it worth it? Thoughts?

1. How long will the metal mechanism last?
2. Can you get replacement o-rings, where?
3. How much for a case of swing-tops?

1. With reasonable care the metal should last for many years.

2. Replacement seals can be purchased through most reasonable HBShops.

3. pass

4. They turn up on ebay from time to time

From another forum, I found these: Schwelmer Pils. Same swing-top, a bit cheaper, 500mls and brown!

One question though, are the rubber seals and mechanisms as replaceable as 'grolsch' ones. For a poor student either are a big investment and I'd be much happier knowing I could get replacement parts, seemingly thats fine with grolsch.

I have a few of both but i rate the brown schwelmers higher. They seem a little stronger and are brown. duh. You should be able to change the seals i think they are interchangeable. If you cant get them id try the hardware shop

And the schwelmer is a much better task to undertake creating empties.

Young people today... I don't know.

You know that the fabric of society is serious unravelling when Grolsch swing-tops are treated like stubbies full of VB...

Mates use the Grolshes so I got 50 for $25 from recyclers in Adelaide. They seem to be good vaalue, look good and beer tastes good out of them!

I simply can't justify the cost of those things! Yes I'm a bit of a scab, that's one of the reasons I started brewing. My favourite bottles are those NSW Bottle Company ones with the the dates on the bottom that I find on road trips. Or those pickaxe jobbies! I get a holiday and free bottles!

The Grolsch bottles are flash as a rat with a gold tooth but...I don't think they're worth it!

I just don't like green glass. I feel better with brown, even if my beer isn't going to be exposed to UV. Go figure.

I got given about a dozen Grolsch bottles from an elderly mate of mine and he must have had them for a while as they are brown glass
I cant recall when Grolsch came in brown glass so it must have been some time ago, like years and years

There might be others that are swing-top/brown as well.
