As many bottles as you could possibly want?

Postby Tyberious Funk » Friday Nov 30, 2007 4:33 pm

I've been looking into the possibility of buying bottles directly from manufacturers rather than paying retail prices for them. I found a couple of places online, like these guys: http://www.cospak.com.au Unfortunately, they tend to sell is large quantities. But I reckon if half a dozen brewers could band together, they could justify buying a single pallet.

Any thoughts?

I've also been trying to track down folding cardboard six-pack holders. You can get them from places like Visy and Amcor, but I'm not sure if they sell in small quantities directly to the public.

That's pretty ambitious, but also a pretty good idea!

I bought some crown seal 330ml from Silverlock Packaging. 20 cartons of 42 bottles each worked at about 35c per bottle. (Cheaper if you order more)
I presume they sell 750ml bottles as well.

my friend and i were looking into getting those german style 500ml bottles... too expensive... even at large quantities... worked out to be 60c a bottle...

Is it really worth it? whats wrong with getting your mates to give you their empties? i know it takes alot longer to get a collection going , but its a damn sight cheaper.

Well, there's a couple of problems with that idea...

Firstly, a handful of mates don't drink beer (I know, I know  ) and those that do drink, consistently forget to keep their bottles. I've even offered them incentives - for every three bottles they give me, I'll give them one free homebrew. It still doesn't work. They piss weak and slack, what can I say?

Secondly, I end up with an eclectic collection of bottles of different shapes and sizes because none of them really have a brew they drink regularly. Does it really matter? Not really I suppose, but it is a pain in the bum (adjusting the capper and all). Plus, they'll often give me bottles with labels that are almost impossible to remove (stupid Carlsberg!!), or screw tops (which work, but again, are a pain in the bum).

All in all, if I could get my hands on 100-200 clean (and preferably new) bottles that are all the same size and shape, the convenience would be well worth the cost. Assuming, of course, they're not too expensive.

Given that a typical K&K brew costs about 35c per stubbie, adding another 35c for the cost of the bottle itself means it still works out cheaper than buying a commercial beer. And, obviously, I get to keep the bottles for later.

Hey TF. Do they have to be stubbies? I quite often see brewers in Melbourne that are selling very cheap or giving away 750ml rolled top bottles. Keep watch on the various forums and ebay etc. You should be able to track some down for alot less than 35 cents each, plus they hold twice as much and are all the same size 8)

Hi Guys, I'm back on the forum after a work induced break.

I have more of the bottles I previously offered here.

They are 650ml heavy glass crown seals, complete with bonus out-of-date beer!

There will be dozens available this week. Pick up in Northcote prefered.

I don't really have a local pub but there are a number of restaurants at the end of my street, plus a trendy wine bar. None of them are particularly approachable though, so I doubt I could ask for their bottles... not that I think they would object, I just don't think any of them could actually be bothered.

But I don't see why I can't raid their recycling bins. They do most of their business on Saturday nights, so I reckon their bins will be chockers on Sunday morning.

It's not illegal is it?

No, unless they ask you to stop, then possibly, but not necessarily.

Lawn bowls clubs are the best source, better than rummaging through spewy pub bins and you'll probably get to have a beer there as well.

I'm a member at Carrum and we have a function nearly every week so the supplies there for sure.
