No longer automatically logged in

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone else was having an issue with not being automatically logged in anymore - for some reason now I need to log in every time I visit, even if I tick the 'log me in automatically' button.

This is happening to me both at home and work so I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue.

Not that I'm aware of - this forum logs me out now both at home and work, whereas as other forums I'm in still work fine both at home and work.

I'll try and allocate some more space for temporary internet files, I don't know if this will make the difference.

Stoped working for me for about a month had to log in each visit, it is working again now.

As NTRabbit says, this sounds like a cookies issue. When you tick the box to "Log me in automatically", it puts a (harmless) little text file on your computer to store your preferences. Most websites that you visit will do this, and it's nothing to be alarmed at.

Have you changed your cookie setting lately, or changed the browser you use?

Try deleting all your cookies while you're logged out, then check the box as you log in again.

To delete cookies in Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options and in the General tab click "Delete Cookies". All browsers have a similar thing. In Mozilla Firefox it's Tools > Options > Privacy tab > Cookies > Clear.

Like I really know anything about this but, doesn't your computer have to accept cookies?

I found I had to turn that little option on. Likely I have no clue what I am talking about so just ignore me, I just like the sound of my own voice.............

No, you can set your browser (depends on the browser though) to one of 3 levels - deny all cookies, receive a prompt every time a website wants to give you a cookie, or accept all cookies . Whilst accepting no cookies is the most secure, you need to accept cookies to be able to browse a significant portion of the web. Not bad for a failed Comp Sci student.

Also, in some browsers (Firefox, for instance) you can choose to delete cookies when you close the browser. Obviously, if it's set to do this you'll lose the stored information about logging you on automatically.

I did as Oliver suggested - logged out, deleted cookies and logged back in again (ticking the 'log me in automatically...' button).

A few hours later and I'm still logged in - probably jinxed it by posting my message so soon but fingers crossed!

Strange that it would happen both at work and home at the same time.

I've been having to log in each visit as well, I also did as Oliver suggested and ticked auto, but still no joy.

Any clues ?

Don't actually log out - either just close the browser window or surf off to another webpage.

Is there a security setting to cover auto logons and stuff?

There are no security settings in the board that affect this.

Have you tried deleting your cookies and trying again? Or changing your cookie settings? For example, if you've got your browser set to delete cookies each time you close your browser, you'll have to log in each time you visit.

Perhaps you've done a software update (Windows update?) recently that changed your settings, unknown to you.

Hmmmm. Well my pc won't auto-login. hasn't the whole time i've come for a look.

Check your cookie settings. Perhaps they're deleted when you exit your browser.

Dont think thats it DD, i use other forums powered by phpBB and am automatically logged in on those.......
