The Tooheys Challenge
The Tooheys Challenge
Given the price, I couldn't help but buy some Toohey's kits when Coles were selling off their homebrew section. I didn't think about what I would actually make from them and now comes the challenge.
Suggestions appreciated
Tooheys Classic Dark Ale (I'm thinking of using this as a base for Wassas Porter )
Tooheys Special Lager (no idea)
Tooheys Real Ale (I'm thinking of using this as a base for a Mountain Goat Hightail clone )

Re: The Tooheys Challenge
The real ale can + 1kg LDME + some crystal + cascade + US-05 will get close to a hightail.
FWIW I'd use the dark ale to brew a Tooheys Old clone.
Cheers,
Tim

Re: The Tooheys Challenge
Thanks Timmy
That's what I thought based on the Mountain Goat recipe here.
In hindsight I probably will make a Tooheys Old with the Dark Ale.
The lager remains a problem to solve.....

Re: The Tooheys Challenge
Depends on what you like in the way of lagers. For myself, I'd boil up some LDME with some nice fruity hops and then ferment with a good yeast such as S-23. Planning on doing something similar with a cheapo can of Coopers Canadian Blonde I also picked up from Coles.
Re: The Tooheys Challenge
Completely IMO but I reckon the the only thing any of the low-end lager tins are good for is advanced k&bs/partials/toucans. They're pretty ordinary if you allow the kit to "shine".
Re: The Tooheys Challenge
Gday mate, I faced the same problem and this is what I did. I'm reluctant to name a style these days but look at IBU and hops to get an idea. Tooheys goop only a base (Liquid malt extract per say)
1.7 kg Tooheys Lager tin
0.75 kg Light dried malt extract
0.5 kg Vienna malt
0.2 kg Amber malt
Worked on goop having 16 IBU
25 gm Simcoe @ 30 min
15 gm Amarillo @ 20 min
15 gm Simcoe @ 10 min
15 gm Amarillo @ flameout
US-05 yeast - 1 ltr starter (yeastcake)
60 IBU
19 ltr
1048 OG
I did a partial mash @ 64c with Vienna & Amber to make it slightly lighter in body. It smelt great, will bottle tomorrow. Really just too cheap to leave on shelf, & I need to continue brewing while finishing AG setup. Hope it helps.
Cheers

Re: The Tooheys Challenge
Therein lies the rub. Being in QLD and not having a temp-controlled fridge, I don't do many lagers. My only experience thus far is with a Coopers Euro Lager mid-strength (no comments on the mid-strength part pleasetimmy wrote:Depends on what you like in the way of lagers.

Coopers European Lager Mid-strength
• 1 Coopers European Lager
• .5 kg Light Dry Malt Extract
• Hallertau (10g at 20 mins, 10g at 5 mins and 10g at flameout)
From recollection, this turned out OK.
Re: The Tooheys Challenge
I Just put down a Tooheys Lager with 2kg of Munich 1.
Haven't a clue how it will turn out.

Re: The Tooheys Challenge
I have a tin of the special larger thats been in the pantry for at least 6 months now..
everytime i look at it i just shut the door and walk away.. but since the challenge is out what about something like..
Tooheys special larger / 1.5kg coopers light malt extract / .250kg dex / Pride of ringwood
Dry hop with Hallertau at racking??
Have no idea what that would turn out like but sounds ok-ish.

Re: The Tooheys Challenge
Rum, I reckon you'd be on to a winner if you could use a true lager yeast, if you've got the ability to keep your temps low enough. Otherwise get yourself a neutral ale yeast, US-05 would do well, and still try to keep the temps low (around 16 degrees, if you can).
Re: The Tooheys Challenge
G'day Bullfrog,
Cheers mate, i might give it a shot soon then if you reckon it'd be ok... once i go threw my other cans first lol
I could get it down to 16 or lower if the weathers the same as it has been lately.
Ta for the tip on the yeast, much appreciated

Grew up in Padstow but saw the light re the Doggies in 69. You could call me a bandwagoner but I think 41 years gets me past that.

Re: The Tooheys Challenge
No worries Mikey,
Bypass Padstow on my way to / from work each day and see many bulldogs stickers on cars around work (chullora)
