Boutique Beer Festival Goers

Postby Littleblue » Thursday Aug 25, 2011 6:43 pm

Hi Folks, this might sound like the odd request but bear with me!

I'm a student at a design college researching about the type of folks who go to Boutique Beer Festivals (our assignment task is to create our own boutique beer festival, funky and random i know) and well I thought what better way to find out than to ask you kind folks. Oliver was also kind enough to give me the ok, please also note I'm not using this for any commerical gain.

Onwards!
So what we know so far...(or what we think we know is that)

1) The Age scale ranges from late 20s to high 30s, but majority probably falls in the 30s section
2) You may or may not dabble in home brewery?
3) You range from "Professionals" to "Tradies" and possibly the odd student.

Some things we're not to sure of are:
4) Where do you guys go to Shop (if the missus isn't doing it)? Myer? DJs? Kmart? Big W? Bunnings? Online?
5) What products do you usually get- i.e. Blackberrys, Iphones, Sports Gear?
6) Brand Values? we're guessing you guys go for value...perhaps quality? as oppose to flashy brands?
7) what music do you listen to? Hendrix etc?
8 ) anything else that could give more of an idea about you? The car you drive? are you macs or pcs?
9) What shows do you watch? Star Trek? How I met your mother?

I hope I don't come across as rude or intrusive, but I'm just a keen student taking a bit of a direct approach.
If I do, I apologise as that's really not the intention.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to add any amount of information. : )

Cheers

Hi Jenny,

I'll go first :-) Not sure if I'll be much help to you though. But here goes ...

1) The Age scale ranges from late 20s to high 30s, but majority probably falls in the 30s section
I'm in my late 30s.

2) You may or may not dabble in home brewery?
Indeed I do.

3) You range from "Professionals" to "Tradies" and possibly the odd student.
I'd be in the professional group.

4) Where do you guys go to Shop (if the missus isn't doing it)? Myer? DJs? Kmart? Big W? Bunnings? Online?
Apart from food shopping (the majority of which we do at Queen Vic Market here in Melbourne rather than at a supermarket) the shop I most often frequent apart from bottleshops is Bunnings to buy stuff for the home. I rarely shop online and can't remember the last time I set foot in a Kmart or Big W. There are a million things I can think of that I'd rather do than go shopping!

5) What products do you usually get- i.e. Blackberrys, Iphones, Sports Gear?
When not buying stuff for the home at Bunnings, homebrew supplies or equipment, alcohol or food (all of which I don't mind doing), I would most often go shopping for clothes. As noted above, this is far from my favourite way to spend time.

6) Brand Values? we're guessing you guys go for value...perhaps quality? as oppose to flashy brands?
I'm not fussed by brands. For me, quality is more important.

7) what music do you listen to? Hendrix etc?
Mostly Australian rock ... Angels, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, etc.

8 ) anything else that could give more of an idea about you? The car you drive? are you macs or pcs?
I live in the inner city and walk to work but the wife has a baby Beemer that I drive sometimes. Definitely a PC guy.

9) What shows do you watch? Star Trek? How I met your mother?
Home, property, food shows. AFL, which I find most enjoyable when the Crows are winning or Port is losing.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the assignment.

Cheers,

Oliver

So what we know so far...(or what we think we know is that)

1) The Age scale ranges from late 20s to high 30s, but majority probably falls in the 30s section
41

2) You may or may not dabble in home brewery?
Not really. I like to pretend I do, but really it's been ages since I last brewed anything...and I've only ever done kits. I feel like such a fraud. Hate to think how much money I waste buying six packs of sierra navada every second day...

3) You range from "Professionals" to "Tradies" and possibly the odd student.
Neither. A couple of degrees (BA and a silly post grad diploma thingy from Massey University. - That led to a lot of student debt and a shit job working for one of NZs "leading charities". Owned and operated a pest control biz in Sydney for 12 years before the traffic gridlock sent me insane. Currently doing building studies in Canberra at tafe (CiT), but seriously considering doing a building degree at Canberra University...probably next year, part time over 6 years. And no, it's got nothing to do with the fact that Zeirholz are opening a brewery & bar on campus...

Some things we're not to sure of are:

4) Where do you guys go to Shop (if the missus isn't doing it)? Myer? DJs? Kmart? Big W? Bunnings? Online?
Aldi, Costco, woolies/coles if we really have to. Don't really buy much (material stuff), just food and beer. Hate clutter and just keeping stuff for the sake of it. Actually thinking of selling my record and CD collection now that I have everything on iTunes. - Probably keep a few of the records that are rare though. I have a lot of sought-after flying nun EPs and Records (the verlaines, sneaky feelings, the bats, the chills, etc.) in mint condition.

5) What products do you usually get- i.e. Blackberrys, Iphones, Sports Gear?
Own an iphone, ipad. Thinkpad for laptop though (which my wife mostly uses), but also a 4g Eee pc (linux cruncheee). I also have an old mac from 80s in working order also. I keep recipes on it to justify it's existence.

6) Brand Values? we're guessing you guys go for value...perhaps quality? as oppose to flashy brands?
I like using the internet to find the best product. Web forums like whirlpool are particularly good.

7) what music do you listen to? Hendrix etc?
Everything. I also play piano (classical) very badly. I had a piano teacher for awhile when I lived in Sydney. Must find a good teacher down here in Canberra. I have 2889 Albums / 34907 songs according to iTunes. Probably half though is music from the 1910s, 20s, 30s, and 40s which I'm still sorting through/categorizing properly. (No copyright anymore on this music.) Been listening to a lot of trad. country lately; Gillian Welch is amazing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEstpk1ucnU

8 ) anything else that could give more of an idea about you? The car you drive? are you macs or pcs?
I'm very accident prone. Never had any interest in cars*, nor sport for that matter. - Though I do watch the odd rugby union game, and some NFL - via online peer-to-peer sites. Works very well. Fox can go get fu...

* We own a boring but practical camry and a hilux (ute).

9) What shows do you watch? Star Trek? How I met your mother?
I download almost everything - eztv is a good site - and/or watch online (iView, Hulu - though Hulu's not working at the moment. FU Murdoch...) Fav tv shows would probably be 'real time with bill maher' 'and 'the colbert report'. Watching Weeds, and Louie at the moment. Sometimes I watch the abc news and the odd foodie thing on sbs. I also like the arts shows on the abc and sbs. Can't remember when I last watched anything on the commercial channels.

Hi Jenny, I'll have a go.

1) The Age scale ranges from late 20s to high 30s, but majority probably falls in the 30s section
I'm 41. But a young 41.

2) You may or may not dabble in home brewery?
I do. It's a dabble.

3) You range from "Professionals" to "Tradies" and possibly the odd student.
I might be a professional. I'm in the forces.

4) Where do you guys go to Shop (if the missus isn't doing it)? Myer? DJs? Kmart? Big W? Bunnings? Online?
Aldi is great! Good prices and quality. If I did it myself and I have, I was an online man.

5) What products do you usually get- i.e. Blackberrys, Iphones, Sports Gear?
Products by way of non-consumerable. Nothing. I only get what I need. If I need it I research the quality and the price and the best shop for it.

6) Brand Values? we're guessing you guys go for value...perhaps quality? as oppose to flashy brands?
It's mostly about the quality. It can be cheap if it's good or value for money.

7) what music do you listen to? Hendrix etc?
Both types, Country & Western or maybe some old rock music.(ACDC yes)

8 ) anything else that could give more of an idea about you? The car you drive? are you macs or pcs?
I ride my BMW Motorcycle to work or where ever else everyday, I use a PC, I go 4wd'ing and camping, I have two kids, I do enjoy watching and participating in sports.

9) What shows do you watch? Star Trek? How I met your mother?
The news, and funny stuff like Hamish and Andy, the footy (that's real footy NRL), oh and MotoGP.

Oh and I'm still a Beer festival virgin.

Hi Guys,

Really appreciate the responses thankyou, it really gives us a starting point to making our own (We're thinking of calling it - Cellarbeertions or What ales you- horrid names i know!)

@Oliver: Thankyou muchly again! and for leading the responses : ) your aid has been much helpful.
@lob: I hear you about the school debt thing, I have a hecs debt sitting for a double degree and a new Fee-help for a design degree. Thanks for the Gillian Welch link, it makes for easy listening and will set the "tone" of the sort of music we'd play at our pretend music festival. : )
@warra: Thanks in advance!
@Sonny: Much appreciated, thankyou very much for your input, the BMW Motorbike actually wasn't expected!

Thanks again!

1) The Age scale ranges from late 20s to high 30s, but majority probably falls in the 30s section
I'm 63 .

2) You may or may not dabble in home brewery?
I have a brewery set up in my garage. I took it up as a retirement hobby.

3) You range from "Professionals" to "Tradies" and possibly the odd student.
I would qualify as a Professional in the work I did before retirement.

Some things we're not to sure of are:

4) Where do you guys go to Shop (if the missus isn't doing it)? Myer? DJs? Kmart? Big W? Bunnings? Online?
I hate shopping, and do it as little as possible. Groceries at Coles/Woollies, vegies and fruit from the garden or a specialist greengrocer, meat from a selected butcher. Clothing etc only as needed.
Homebrew supplies from Marks Home Brew in Newcastle. We do shop online for DVDs and other things not available in Aus or only available at ridiculous prices.

5) What products do you usually get- i.e. Blackberrys, Iphones, Sports Gear?
Nope, none of those new fangled things are of interest to me. I use a desktop pc, and a 4 year old pre-paid mobile. I still use a CRT tv, although it is HD widescreen, along with a HD set top box/recorder, and a DVD player.

6) Brand Values? we're guessing you guys go for value...perhaps quality? as oppose to flashy brands?
Brands as such don't bother me, but I generally buy these brands for their quality: Asics runners, Rockport shoes, R.M Williams jeans.

7) what music do you listen to? Hendrix etc?
I have a few Hendrix in my collection, but my main interests are Blues from all eras (I have about 120 Blues CDs in my collection), classic country (not Aus hillbilly), and 60's era music.

8 ) anything else that could give more of an idea about you? The car you drive? are you macs or pcs?
I drive a Subaru. Desktop PC, but about to inherit daughter's laptop, so mrs warra can look up her facebook upstairs instead of coming downstairs to our office to use the PC.

9) What shows do you watch? Star Trek? How I met your mother?
Very few modern shows, and never any sci-fi type of fantasy. We do like Miranda, and Modern Family. I always follow the MotoGPs, and the Isle of Man TT races.
Apart from that we watch mostly DVDs of classic movies, and classic comedy shows such as F Troop, Dad's Army, As time goes by, Get Smart, etc etc, you get the idea.

I am, in my field a complete professional.

I also have a mobile phone. It's a pre-paid I've had for about 3½ years. I put $50 pre-paid on it at a time. Six months later I usually get a text message from Optus to tell me if I don't use the credit within 6 months of my last recharge, I will lose it. I probably make no more than about 15 to 20 calls a year on the thing.
The funny thing is, I don' feel at all deprived.
Same with Facebook. I take so long between visits, they send me an e-mail reminding me I need to go back on as they've missed my company (well, they've missed the opportunity to expose me to advertising, but who's arguing?)

I agree that smart phones are overrated. People spend too much time on them checking facebook et al, even in social environments like cafes, and are loosing the art of conversation. Having said that, twitter is actually pretty good on a smart phone. I use it for news (just follow reuters) now rather than read website newspapers. If something looks interesting I just click on the link to read the full article. And following "interesting" people - Stephen Fry posts lots of stuff on technology, media, etc and Mark Bittman has plenty to say on the politics of food and the environment, as well as easy to prepare unprocessed recipes. It's a bit of a revolution twitter in that you don't have to go looking for info on a topic anymore, you just follow people who share common interests and they keep you constantly updated.

Better late than never.

1) The Age scale ranges from late 20s to high 30s, but majority probably falls in the 30s section
Just turned 33
2) You may or may not dabble in home brewery?
Dabble as often as possible
3) You range from "Professionals" to "Tradies" and possibly the odd student.
Tradie.
Some things we're not to sure of are:
4) Where do you guys go to Shop (if the missus isn't doing it)? Myer? DJs? Kmart? Big W? Bunnings? Online?

Avoid it like the plague. Electrical wholesalers, Bunnings and Surf shops (the real ones. Not the pretend surf/rip off priced clothing merchants at Westfields) when I have to . Also JB Hi fi.
5) What products do you usually get- i.e. Blackberrys, Iphones, Sports Gear?
Surf gear, that is wetsuits, leg ropes wax etc. CD's.
6) Brand Values? we're guessing you guys go for value...perhaps quality? as oppose to flashy brands?
Quality is what's important, although brands can represent value for money from a cheap stuff falls apart, therefore are false economy perspective.
7) what music do you listen to? Hendrix etc?
Quite eclectic taste actually. From older country like Elvis and Denver through to metal. Quite like Hendrix too actually. I especcially hate dance, techno and electronic "music".
8 ) anything else that could give more of an idea about you? The car you drive? are you macs or pcs?
Drive a work van. Surf often as possible. Married with threee daughters. 2 dogs. Follow AFL. Go to the odd concert. Never been to a boutique beer festival unless you count Fairfield Octoberfest, although that could change if there were to be a boutique beer festival in my neck of the woods.
9) What shows do you watch? Star Trek? How I met your mother?
I watch AFL and related shows almost exclusively. I could quite honestly go 6 months of the year without turning on the TV.

Cheers

Yeah, I thought of that but she'd be able to fix it with one phone call to her brother. At least when she's on facebook it gives me an opportunity to replace one half finished tallie with a newer half finished tallie without her noticing and giving me grief. 8)
