flat beer and PET bottles
flat beer and PET bottles
I figure I would buy a case of spring water for brewing. That way I could also use the PET bottles. Bad mistake.
Both batches came out flat.
The bottles bulged and the level of beer in the bottles was lowered.
I suspect the beer carbonated properly but exerted sufficient pressure fot the co2 to leak through the cap or perhaps the walls .
So I'm not going to ty that again, unless someone persuades me that I'm full of it.

Whilst there is nothing like cracking the seal on a glass stubby, the first batch i brewed, about four months ago, was in PET bottles and these are still sufficiently fizzy.
Perhaps the bottles you used were not designed to hold the extra pressure produced when holding in a carbonated beverage. Do they contain the usual plastic seal under the lid? If this is not the case you may need to check yourpriming technique.

poppe,
Judging by your comments about the bottles bulging, it certainly sounds like you have bottled in the type of bottle not meant to hold pressure.
Not sure what you could do about that now.
Someone might have a cunning plan.
trueman,
You won't see any bubbles at all until you take the cap off. Just think about commercial beer. Same thing happens there.
Cheers,
Oliver

No despite the fact that I live in WA I was originally from Melbourne and I am a MIGHTY SAINTS FAN.
139 POINT WIN OVER THE LIONS TONIGHT. (With 7 key players out injured still) Not a bad effort.
What a game.
Im glad the crows beat WCE. My wife won a carton of Corona off the neighbour. She just didnt tell me she had bet until after the game in case she lost.
Well we shall see you in the finals then...

Back to the topic guys
Try 1.25L Coke bottles. I have a friend who uses them exclusively.
Quick rinse and dry, store upside down in plastic bags till needed, no sanitiser ( the coke does a good job ).
Great to take to parties as you just throw the empties.
I have been using a few in each batch I bottle, short term haven't noticed a taste difference.
And the SWANS are looking good this year, not that I know much about the game up here

Hully,
So can I also use 2 litre Coke bottles too then? I am about to brew a second batch which will be ready for bottling way before my first batch has even been consumed. I didnt want to have to go and buy more PET bottles if I can help it. But we drink lots of Diet coke so have 2 litre PET bottles. Assuming they are okay to use how many carbonation drops would I use? 5 of them perhaps???
BTW Yes Sydney is a real worry this year for the Sainters. The only team I am really worried about.

Cant see why not. My mate has a family that drinks more coke than he can drink beer
So he has a constant supply of bottles. His wife just rinses them and drains them till completely dry then stores them. Does not sanitize before filling and does not have any problems.
5 or 6 carbonation drops sounds OK if you use 2 in a longneck. I was using 3 in the 1.25L bottles.
I have bulk primed my last 2 batches which makes using odd size bottles easier.
