Ingredients in a can

Post by silkworm »

Is there anyway to find out exactly what is in a kit? Or is that the secret to kill for?
What is the exact mix of ingredients in a Coopers Heritage Larger Can?
2 reasons
1.to save testing first before mucking around with the taste.
2.To learn more from the big guys.....
Cheers

I dunno, seems like the same thing as asking KFC what the recipe for their secret herbs and spices is.

Well that one is now public domain, but as for the kits...who knows!

It really is as ntrabbit says, someone could tell you whats in the heritage lager can but would be excommunicated if they did.
All i can say is its malt and hops.

It would be nice to know what hops thay used at least.
Even if no quantities or methods were given we could then use the same hops for example if we wanted to modify. I recon after a while though, with more understanding of the different hops/malt flavours, someone could make a close guess. No? Like a chef tasting a soup could tell you what is in it...
Thanks for the feed back folks.....

It's my understanding that Cooper's uses Pride of Ringwood exclusively, even in their homebrew pilsner kits.

I'll have to give Pride of ringwood a go someday. There have been a few posts here in the past that warned never to use it. Why is this ? Is it just a very strong overpowering flavour? If so Coopers must us it sparingly...

I'd be surprised if they didnt use PoR exclusively in their kits. Pretty much only the bittering acids survive the extract concentration, PoR are much cheaper and higher %AA than Saaz, especially if no Saaz character is going to make it through.

You can put hop flavour into a can of extract, just add it when you put the extract in the can in the form of essential oil basically. Thats how its commonly done I beleive. The bitterness can be added in the same way.
Not saying if thats how coopers do it or not! I have been sworn to secrecy.
Chuck hahn has no problems making it public knowledge though that thats how they put the hop flavour in the malt shovel cans.

Rabbit,

Using Fuggles will be interesting with the Toohey's Dark Ale.

From what I've been told Willamette is the aroma hop that Tooheys use in their Old beer. This could be wrong of cause, but I've used it and have been happy with the result.

This reply seems like its in the wrong thread, but anyway... I cant ever recall having actually drunk Tooheys Old, so im not trying to emulate it too much - just trying to make a good Dark Ale :)

As far as making a good dark ale goes fuggles is the number one choice of hop.
Not just my opinion but pretty much thats the standard hop for such beers both commercially and at home.

Guest,

That's all a bit rich, don't you think, coming from somebody anonymous?

As for your opinion of K&K - you know how to make friends, don't you? We all started somewhere.

Speaking of Trolls, there is one under the bridge on my way to work it sees me leaving and then the bugger goes to my house and drinks my beer with Evo's pony.

DD,

Are you hiding Evo over there after he came looking for his pony?

Well

He did say he was coming didn't he.

I am thinking he got off in Vancouver and is following the train tracks to London.
